JOHN FELDER TELLS
OF SCOUT JAMBOREE
JOHN FELDER
Felder was the representative
of the Negro Bov Scouts of
Savannah at the World
Jamboree in France
When our ship cast off from
La Harve, one of the French
Zeds (interpreters) stood on the
$hore with tears streaming
<jown his face as lie waved lare-
yeli. He might have laughed
®r shrugged his shoulders in in-
fiiference, tut he stood there
visably crying, unashamed ox
his tears. The words that he
spoke were these “Those boys
ate the younger brothers,of the
boys who liberated u; from the
Nazis, and we love them all.
This world brotherhood was
the purpose of the Sixth World
Jamboree in Moisson, France
That French scout was typical
of the spirit cf brotherhood that
was earned out at the jambo¬
ree. My thoughts are of the
campfire on the clo ing night
Smuts from different nations
all over the world were assemb¬
led at the Scottish camp sing¬
ing the songs of different coun¬
tries and contributing their bits
of scouting to the campfire.
It is remarkable how scouts
of different nations and ton
gues can so well understand the
language of scouting and bro¬
therhood. These scouts wen
more closely bound than ever
before. At the close of thr
campfire the jamboree song was
sung and the boys went march¬
ing back to their various camps
arm in arm singing "Auld Lang
Syne.” Brotherhood is happl-
nes and the scouts at the jam¬
boree had lots of happiness.
In order to make the jambo¬
ree possible, the French govern¬
ment and scout organizations
and friends underwrote a sum
of three million dollars. The
marmalade and meat ration per
boy at the jamboree was equal
to a French family’s ration for
a month.
