RAY GIBSON SPEAKS
ON SOCIAL ACTION
Rev. Ray Gibbons spoke to
a group of members of the
First Congregational church at
a luncheon last Wednesday at
the West Broad Street YMCA.
Rev. Gibbons is director of the
Council for Social Action of
Congregational churches. He
spoke in the interest of estab¬
lishing a Social Action Com¬
mittee in the Congregational
church here in Savannah.
Although this was Rev. Gib¬
bons’ first southern assignment
with a colored church, he ex¬
pressed the need for such a
social action committee in the
First Congregational church in
Savannah, and the great possi¬
bilities of improving race rela¬
tionships.
Those present at the lunch¬
eon were Rev. A C. Curtright,
Prof. R. W. Gadsden, Mrs. Mary
Ayers, Ms. Fannie Pettie, Mrs.
Margaret Walker, Miss Made¬
line Shivery, Mr. and Mrs. W.
W. Leftwich, A- C. Council and
Stanley Whittley.
EASTERN STAR
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
Sunday, April 18, was the
beginning of the Order of the
Eastern Star Scholarship pro¬
gram throughout the State of
Georgia. The members of the
five chapters of Savannah
forned out in a body and ren¬
dered a program at the Ma¬
sonic temple. The papers read
by Mrs. Cora Jacobs, a mem¬
ber of Solomon Temple Chap¬
ter 95, and Mrs. "Willie Wil¬
liams of Mt. Moriah Chapter
No. 37, explained clearly the
object of our scholarship fund
and paid a most beautiful trib¬
ute to our Grand Worthy Pa¬
tron, Brother Sol. C. Johnson,
for whom this scholarship fund
was dedicated.
Rev. W. C. Davis, pastor of
St. Philip Monumental AME
cliurch and a member of Prince
Hall Chapter No. 258, delivered
an impressive sermon, taking
lor h's subject, “Life.” He
urged that we should never
miss an opportunity to help
needy boys and girls, it was
most appropriate for the begin¬
ning of our educational effort.
Mrs. Mary H. Jones, grand
lecturer, was mistress of cere-
monies- Mrs. Mary L. Ayers,
grand worthy matron commend-
ed the sisters for such a fine
program. Mrs. Minnie De-
Vaughn, grand juvenile matron,
presented her juvenile child¬
ren.

Johnson, the grand worthy pa-

president, Miss Julia Lowe; sec¬
retary, Mrs. Evelyn May; treas¬
urer, Mrs. Hattie Hurst; re¬
porter, Mrs. Jamie Graham.

Lowe, Miss Camilla Weems,
Mrs. J. M. Walker, Mrs. Cathe¬
rine Williams, Mrs., Countess

Efforts are treing made to
contact all former Spelmanites.
They are urged to attend the
next meeting of the club May
16 at the YMCA, at 4 o’clock.

Jabberwock at the auditorium
in Nashville.

Phi Alphas won first prize foi
the group skit. The AKA’s
from Fisk university won sec¬
ond prize for this group skit,
and the Omegas, third prize.
In all the skits combined, the
person who is most outstanding
gets a prize, Miss Robinson
winning that prize. She was a
member of the dramatic clue
at Beach, and also very popu¬
lar among the younger set.

A few days ago, a man and
his wife were arraigned in
court on a misdemeanor- The
husband, called Doc Smith, wu-
said to have been coming out
of a theatre on ihe eastside of
town with a woman. He war,
met by his wife, who beat him
severely over the head with an
iron rod. This news was record¬
ed and sent out from tire po¬
lice ccurt over the radio.
The Doc Smith spoken of was

a surprise anniversary dinner
was given in honor of the 42nd
wedding anniversary ol their
parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. G.
Leake. The guests arrived at 8
p. m., then the guests of honor
were decoyed to the residence
at 8:30. A lovely wedding cake
decorated the table. When the
guests ol honor arrived every¬
one began singing “Here Comes

tion was over a lovely turkey
