VOTE BAR IS SMASHED
GREiENVILLE, S. C- (ANPt —
Man is a funny creature—un-
predictable. What he is ex
to do, many times he
wen’t do. But this shifting
course proved a boon to Ne-
groes in Greenville county, for
although the method by which
groes now have the vote fran-
chise was not a good one, it
bodes well for their future.
Last week, just 13 months
after an all-white jury of 12
voted to acquit 23 fellow towns¬
men vdno admitted participa¬
tion -in the lynching of a Ne¬
gro accused of slaying a taxi
driver, the Greenville County
D:tnociattc uxecutivei (commit¬
tee decided to open its roll
books and ballot boxes to per¬
mit Negroes to vote in the par¬
ty primaries. Not only did the
decision strike at th« party¬
primary control of the state
committee and' convention, it
also emphasized the paradoxi¬
cal picture in which a commu-
nity with a record of efforts
to improve *race relations be¬
came the focal point of nation¬
al attention because of the
lynching episode.
In Its action, the county
group stood at odds with
control on three issues- They
