backed for the post by the New

approval after a visit to Wash¬
ington. He succeeds Dr. Ra - 1
phael O’Hara Lanier, who re¬
signed as minister to Liberia
about three months ago to as- 1
sume the presidency of the new
Negro un.versity in Houston-
Dudley, who is about forty
and has served as a counsel 1
for the NAACP, assisting Thur-
good Marshall, left that post to
go to the Virgin Islands about
three years ago to become exe¬
cutive assistant to Gov. Charles
Harwood. Gov. Harwcod was
from New York and the local
organization was instrumental
in the appointment made at
that time. Judge Hastie suc¬
ceeded Harwood and Dudley re¬
mained there for about a year
as assistant to Gov. Hastie. He
resigned and returned to his
work with the NAACP.
The Dudley appointment,
caught political leaders rather
flatfooted. Congressman Daw-
;en was said to be grooming
several candidates including
Willard Townsend, labor lead¬
er. Mrs. Mary Bethune was
reportedly looking over pros-
psetives. Political comment
doubted that an appointment
would be made at this time
because it appeared practically
mpossible to secure a confir¬
mation from the hostile anti-
administration congress. The
oowerful New York machine,
however, was able to win the
dace with ease.
