Mrs. Bethune
Rebuffed by
D. A. R.
WASHINGTON, D. C.—Mrs.
Mary McLeod Bethune, founder
and president of the National
Council of Negro Women, Inc.,
has now joined that group of
Negro women who have sus¬
tained slaps in the face from
the Daughters of the American
Revolution. Marian Anderson
was the first to be insulted by
the DAR when they reiused to
allow her to sing in Constitu-
tion Hall; Hazel Scott second,
when they refused to allow
her to give a piano recital;
now Mrs- Bethune.
In a communication to
Roscoe C. O'Byrne,
general of the DAR, Mrs.
thune asked for the use
Constitution Hall for the
pose of the National
of Negro Women sponsoring
concert to raise funds for
National Council. Mrs.
thune stated the noble
poses for which the
had been organized; its
than 850,000 membership,
the real need for the
to raise funds in order to con¬
tinue to supply America with
the finest Negro female lead¬
ership-
The action of Mrs. O’Byrne
in dealing with Mrs- Bethune
in this instance was even, more
insulting than
slaps in the face heretofore is¬
sued to Marian Anderson
Hazel Scott.
The attempts of sponsors
Miss Anderson and Miss Scott
to secure the use of Constitu¬
tion hall were for them to per-
form on the stage of Constitu¬
tion Hall a purely commercial
THE SAVANNAH TRIBUNE
concert. However, in this in¬
stance, Mrs. O'Byrnc and the
DAR have not simply denied
an artist to make a living, or
to add to their income by sing¬
ing at Constitution Hall; ra¬
ther, they have deliwred a re¬
sounding slap into the faces of
the combined strength of Ne¬
gro womanhood which repre¬
sents major sororities, church
organizations, social institu¬
tions, civic groups, etc. For the
National Council of Negro Wo¬
men today unquestionably rep ■
resents the best educated,
wealthiest and most politically
alert group of Negro women in
America.
Indeed, it will be interesting
to note (to see) if the National
Counc.l of Negro Women will
bow to this insult to their na¬
tional president, who was seek¬
ing the use of the nail in be¬
half of the total organization,
or whether they will accept
the challenge of the DAR, who
have proved to the world that
they have no intention of
charging the demagogic and
archaic restrict'ons against
Negro artists in particular ana
Negro people in general-
Mrs. O’Byrne answered Mrs-
Bethune’s request for the use
of Constitution Hall, not by ex¬
tend ng Mrs. Bethune the
courtesy of a phone call or of
a conference where Lie matter
could have been discussed amid
social amenities, but by refer¬
ring Mrs. Bethune, the vener¬
able and outstanding woman,
the founder and president
the National Coin 4 U of Negro
Women, to the DAR’s hired
renting agent, Fred Hand, who
obviously could not rent Mrs.
Bethune Constitution Hall, and
who, Mrs. Bethune reported,
was greatly embarrassed. Mrs
O’Byrne shifted the weight of
a situation upon) Mr- Hand
which has proven extremely
embarrassing and distressing in
the past.
Now is the time, it seems to
this writer, for the members
of the National Council ol Ne¬
gro Women to band together as
never before to close their
ranks around their leader, Mrs.
Bethune, and to accept th:s
challenge on the part of
DAR to thwart the
and aspirations of the
people of America. The
crat, Hitlerean policies of
DAR as they relate to the use
of Constitution Hall by
singers, Negro pianists,
must be changed. The day
now. The iron is ’hot.
National Council of Negro
men should strike the blow
would wipe this barrier
Negroes away forever. In
shadow of the nation’s capita 1
such a blow cannot be
too hard.
