“After three years as a
tenant, I got married and bar-
gained to buy 40 acres,” says
farmer Burrell. “My wife and
I worked hard and paid it off.
Then we bought 80 acres more,
and finally an additional 82
acres.
With the help of a tractor, a
combine, three tenant farmers,
md two sons, who served in
the Pacific during the war, the
.i.irrctls operate their farm.
Here’s how the acres are allot¬
ted: 60 to cotton, 50 to corn, 20
0 hay, five to peanuts and
.weatpotatoes, and the rest to
improved pasture and wood¬
land In the pasture acres are
21 sheep, 3'J h :ad of cattle and
17 hogs.
“Cotton and cat! le—that’s a
good combination,” says Mr
Burrell- It makes me feel mere
secure than just cotton, alone.”
Ti. cughout a large part of
the cotton region, farm dtno¬
ons’ration agents of the State
E. itensio.i Services are working
year m and year out with far¬
mers, encouraging more of
Ihern to do just what farmer
Burrell is dcing—to diversify.
Of course, all are n*ot urged
to grow cotton and cattle. Some
wi h small farms are encourag-
d to raise poultry, vegetables,
1 olher crops along with their
-etton. The agents call it bal¬
anced farnnng or d.versiftea-
ion; and they say it means
better diets for most farmers,
as w, 11 as a year-round cash
income instead of just at cot¬
ter, harvesting time.
Cue way of getting more far¬
mers to grow sideline crops
along With their cotton is to
have oae cf their neighbors
demonstrate how it can be
done Mr. Burrell is a demon-
strator for his community. He
works very closely with his
ecuniy agent, R. M. Mackey, in
di mendra’ing new practices.
The Burrell’s white bungalow
cottage, inside and out, is a
model, too, for Madison county
farm pccple. “You know,”
says Mrs. Burrell, “the real
purpose of our farm and all the
, hard work we do on it is to
provide ourselves with a good
Lving and a few comforts.”
And the Burrels live at home.
They grow most of their food
on their farm- Haras, sides of
