The accident in which. Mr.
Mayes was killed occurred
about 22 miles this side of Fort
Pierce, Fla, while he, M. F.
Jackson, D. W. Barnett, Elmore
Harvey, and Dennis Smith were
returning to their homes in
Albany from a regional meet¬
ing of the company held in
Miami, I ,a.
The Mayes' party was just
about to meet a truck on Lie
road when a car suddenly pull¬
ed out from behind a truck and
ran head-on ii^Lo the insurance
men’s car..
In the era-h Messrs Mayes,
Jackson and Barnett were kill¬
ed instantly, as was the driver
oi the car which crashed into
them, said to have been a Mr.
I Owens, colored, who was drlv-
Irg his employer’s car from
Cincinnati to Miami, where he
to meet his boss.
Mr. Harvey’s jaw was broken
in the crash and he and Mr.
f’nith, who receive! only a
sprained ankle, were hospitaliz¬
ed.

executives in the Atlanta Life
Insurance office at Albany, Mr.
Jackson being the manager.
Mr. Mayes was a native of
Savannah and had been with
the insurance company for the
past three years- He was a
graduate of the Georgia State
college and a veteran of World
War II.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Helen Moody Mayes, who
is a teacher at Albany State
college; an el; ven year old son;
his parents, Mr. and Mr-;. Fred
Mayes, and other relatives.
