DEEP RIVER BOYS TO
GO ON TELEVISION
The Deep River Boys, Ameri¬
ca's top headlii^fc vocal group,
whose recent RCA-Victor re-
cording of “Recess in Heaven’’
is currently one of the most-
played, most listened to discs,
have signed a special contract
with the National Broadcasting
Company to appear on the op¬
ening programs of 38 affiliated
television stations, scheduled to
commence video operations in
early 1949.
Featuring Harty Douglas, the
Jllusioif veil that was edged in
narrow silk lace. She carried
a bouquet of white gladioli and
narcissus tied with white satin
ribboq with streamers to the
hem of the gown.

NEW YORK—The American
Cfrncer Society’s nationwide
program through
organizations was ieinfprced
by important support from the
National Council of Negro Wo¬
men, Inc., it was announced
this week by Mrs. Etnah R.
Bouttee, of the American Can¬
cer Society’s national staff.
In a lengthy resolution, the
National Council of Negro Wo¬
men recently recommended to
its members and affiliated
cou Icils, to enlist in the war
on cancer by actively cooper¬
ating with the American Can¬
cer Society in its program of
education, service and research.
The resolution pointed out
that at the present rate, more
than one hundred and eighty-
four persons will die cf cancer
i i the United States this year—
‘One out of eight Americans,
i rw living, will die of cancer,
unless something is done.' 1

A surprise package is always a
pleasure, whether It’s for Christmas,
a birthday, or a weekday dinner!
Particularly on the latter occasion,
surprises are unlooked for. Tues¬
day, perhaps it's beef loaf; Thurs¬
day, liver and bacon. And of course
desserts can take the same trend
week after week . , . custards,
puddings, Ice-cream.
Well, here are several recipes
that will really surprise the most
blas6 in your family. A Baked
Apple that has a different touch
added — a out-like center with rich
flavor and crunchiness. Or what
about some Bran Muffins that have
both raisins and spice? As if that
wore not enough, here's a recipe
that holds a surprise within —
rolled-up cabbage leaves with a
deliciously seasoned ground beef
mixture.
Try to surprise your folks some
night soon. It wW pay real
dividend* in happy eating and good
digestion.
V4 teaspoon salt
Dash of pepper
1 tablespoon minced onion
% teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
14 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter or other fat
8 medium-sized cabbage leaves
114 cups canned tomatoes, put
through sieve, or 114 caps
tomato Juice
14 cup sour cream
14 teaspoon salt
Dash of pepper
Combine beef, wheat flakes, salt,
pepper, onion, Worcestershire sauce,
and milk. Shape into 8 rolls.
Brown in fat Cook cabbage leaves,
covered, in small amount of boiling
salted water until wilted. Wrap
each meat roll in a cabbage leaf
and fasten with toothpicks. Return
to skillet, add tomatoes mixed with
sour cream, salt, and pepper. Cover
and simmer 40 minutes. Remove
rolls to platter. Pour sauce over
meat rolls. Makes 4 servings.
Baked Apple Surprise
4 large apples
% to % cup brown sugar, firmly
packed, or granulated sugar
% cup Crape-Nuts
2 tablespoons butter
Wash and core apples. Pare off
1-inch strip around tops. Place in
baking pan. Fill cavity of each
apple with mixture of sugar, Grape-
Nuts and butter. Pour water into
pan to cover bottom. Cover and
bake in hot oven (400° F.) about
20 minutes. Remove cover and con¬
tinue baking until apples aro soft
in center, hasting occasionally with
syrup in pan. CooL Serve plain
or with cream.
Raisin Bran Spice Muffin*
1 cup sifted flonr
3'/4 teaspoons double-acting baking
powder
% teaspoon salt
2 tabieepoona sugar

J4 teaspoon ginger
1 egg, well beaten
1 cup milk
3 tablespoons melted butter or
other shortening
2 cups raisin bran
M teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon sugar
Sift flour once, measure, add
baking powder, salt, sugar, and
spices, and sift again. Combine
egg and milk. Add to flour mixture,
add shortening, then mix only
enough to dampen flour. Fold in
raisin bran. Fill greased muffin
pans % full. Sprinkle with mixture
of cinnamon and sugar. Bake in hot
oven (425° F.) 20 minutes, or until
done. Makes 10 medium muffins.
