Tuskegee Relays Produce
I By Chuck Smith |
TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE. Ala.
May 6— “It was _______ tough.”
This Just about sums up the
twenty-fourth running of the 1
famed Tuskegee Institute relays.
and the failure of the Savannah j
State college "Flying Tigers” to I
capture the feature 2 mile relay
trophy for the second successive
year.
Despite the terrific lead 880
Enoch Roberts, former Beach
high student, an equally second
lap by “Big Joe” Turner, and I
a stellar anchor by Frank "The
Rocket” Prince, the weak third
leg by Frank "Breadtruck”
Johnson was the telling blow in
the big event, Johnson was given
a ten yard advantaee but came
in trailing by fifteen yards.
Charles Shepard, Texas College
anchor man and former Nation¬
al AAU 800 meter champ, gave
a terri r ir surge to hi* the tn*v
ahead of Prince by five yards
for a clocking of 8:7.
The Savanna:i team apparent¬
ly was disheartened by the two
mile loss. However. Roberts,
Turner, C. P Harris and Prince
came back to take third in the
mile behind Tilotson and Texa;
college, being timed in 3 20.5.
Roberts was the workhorse ot
the team, finishing fourth in the
4to 'at 140) and then coming
bark to run the leg on the two
mile relay, and doubling again
for the third lap on the mile
relay.

The Savannah Bears and the I
Macon Colored Peachers will j
play Sunday at Grayson’s sta¬ !
dium. The game, which is sched-
uled to begin at 3 p. m., will]
probably be attented by a large;
crowd as the boys from middle.
Georgia are bringing to Savan - 1
nah a team which lia, only j
tasted defeat once this year,
although they have met some,
cf the top notch teams in their
section of the state.
The Bears have this week strengthened by the j j
their line-up
addition of two new pitchers and i
are all set for thi; contest. Ad- j

Coach Ted A. Wright scratched
Prince for the mile run in ord-

record. Ironically enough, Texas

Other developments found
Thomas Turner failing to sur¬
vive the 100-yard trials Friday,
with Evans and McDanels go¬
ing out in the pole vault at nine
feet, six inches. Pogue failed to
place in the broadiump, with
Hawkins doing likewise in the
shot put and discus. Turner
again, was unable to score in
the discus.
A mild upset wa.s scored in the
100 yard darii when James
thers of Tillot on flashed to
vitcor.v over Fred Guy, the
famed Morehouse college
hitting the tape in 9 7.
However, the Maroon
-von one first place in the broad
lump when Olden Stinson sailed
21 feet, 10 1-2 ins. to win the
shiny gold medal.
‘John Cannon of Clark, placed
third in the 120-yard high hur¬
dles behind Fredcri-k Faucett

won in 1.5.1s. Cannon, however,
finl-hed second in the discus
