be held December 3-7, in the Na¬
tional Guard Armory, Washington,
D. C. Mr. Law, who has long
been active in youth work serving
r.t one time as chairman of the
NAACP annual youth conference,
was informed in a letter dated
August 28 by Gloster B. Current,
director of branches, that he was
one of the two persons selected to
represent the Association. Five
youth members from various sec-
tions of the country and a youth
advisor will also represent
NAACP.
Mr. Law said that as a repre¬
sentative of the Association it will
be his task to get the conference
to take a strong civil rights posi-
tion. “In view of Governor Tal-
madge’s stupid refusal )o include
Negroes in our state’s delegation,”
he said, “I have definitely consent¬

MUSICAL SCHETCH
OF LOUIS JORDAN
j
i
Louis Jordan, “Mr. Personal-
ity,” who will appear in person
with his orchestra at City Audi-
torium on Nov. 3, comes from '
a musical family. His father
still leads a 22-piece band in
Jordan’s home town of Brink-
ley, Arkansas. Louis, who stud¬
ied symphonic clarinet di.’.ing
his college days, plays alto sax,
tenor sax, baritone sax and
clarinet equally well. Not ony
is he a fine musician; he dic¬
tates his own arrangements
and is a composer with many
hit songs to his credit.
Jordan is a perfectionist who
^rehearses his musicians until
every arrangement is exactly
right. The band’s top position
on popularity polls attest to the
fact that these long hours of
rehearsal are well spent.
Jordan prefers the light
classics for h«; own listening,
with Leopold Stokowski his
favorite condutor.

North Carolina Resists
In contrast to the decision
handed down in Louisiana,
Federal Judge Johnson J. Hayes
of the Middle District of North
Carolina refused (o order tho
University of North Carolina
to admit four Negroes to its
law school. NAACP attorneys
are preparing to appeal to the
United States Circuit Court of
Appeals for a reversal of this
ruling, which maintained that
the facilities of North Carolina
College (for Negroes > were
equal to those of the univer¬
sity of North Carolina. In refu¬
tation of this assertion, the
NAACP had presented as ex¬

that “on every point of com¬
