TEXAS NEGRO
PHYSICIAN NAMED
fC.mtlnued from Page One)
miuedly to conquer typhoid, tu¬
berculosis and deadly infant
diarrhea among Negroes, has
seen many changes in the re¬
lationship of Negroes and
whites during the time he leas
been here.
When he first came, Negroes
! waited in hospital halls until
doctors had treated white pat¬
ients. Theatres in the city were
closed to colored persons. A
stranger in town was pistol-
whipped for asking at the box
office of one of the theatres if
he could be admitted.
Taylor now has a 15-bed mod¬
ern hospital for Negroes. Their
health is better, the infant di¬
arrhea death rate is down, tu¬
berculosis almost whipped, and
Negroes have made some pro¬
gress toward admittance in the
city’s theatre. One of the the¬
atres. the Rita, on Main St.,
admits them to the balcony.
Dr. Dickey is optimistic about
the future of Negro-white re¬
lations in this small city of
some 10,000 persons. Among
other things, he said:
“Race relations are getting i
better. We need time for the
know races each to understand other. Everyone and just) to j
1
| needs to be patient, and things
that seem problems wont be
| problems any more. We (the
Negroes 1 can’t make anybody
( like us. It’s a thing of the
| heart. AH we can do is wait and
hope.”
