Abolishment
of Segreg-at’n
(Continued from Page one)
issued a l pastoral mV 7 letter ‘ toTwlal decree-
J ing an m d a te end
I segregation in all Roman
Cathoiic churches in North
Caro i lna and demanded that I
his ultimatum be adhered to by
all the clergy in the diocese.
The closing of the Negro
church at Newton Grove and
the acceptance of its communi¬
cants in a nearby white Cath¬
olic church may be followed by
the abolition of all Negro
Catholic churches in the dio¬
cese with the result that their
congregations will be integrat¬
ed with those of nearby white
churches.
With reference to his ulti¬
matum Bishop Waters said:
“I am happy to take the re¬
sponsibility for any evil which
might result from different
races worshiping God together,
but I would be unwilling to take
the responsibility of those who
refuse to worship God with a
person of another race.
“I am not unmindful, as a
Southerner, of the force of this
virus of prejudice among some
persons in the South, as well as
in the North. I know", however,
that there is a cure for this
virus and that is, our faith.”
