CALIFORNIA’S HEAVY¬
WEIGHT HOPE
Not since the days of Max Baer
the fabulous “California Adonis,”
has California produced a heavy¬
weight as exciting as 24-year-old
Eddie Maehen of Redding, Calif.,
newest heavyweight sensation.
The dark horse of the current
heavyweight elimination tourna-
nent, Maehen, with only 15 pro
fights under his belt (he has won
them all (11 hy knockout), is al¬
ready the 10th ranking heavy¬
weight contender. But what makes
this brawny 5 foot llVz inch 192
pounder such a hot prospect, it-
the fart that he combines the three
qualities most desired in a cham-
oion—speed, skill and punch. Of
ill the leading aspirants for Rocky
Marciano’s vacated title, Eddit
Maehen is perhaps the most im-
iressive. And he is very much in
the contest.
Last week as veteran Archie
Moore prepared to take on James j
-f. Parker of Canada in a heavy¬
weight tuneup fight, and Flovd
'atterson favored his injured
hand in anticipation of his Sep-
ember meeting with Moore, Ma¬
hon stepped into the fistic spot-
ight by scoring an impressive
■ighth round knockout of Nino
Valdes in Miami. Fighting- before
r capacity audience, Maehen han¬
ded his larger Cuban opponent 1
with such case, that fight follow-1
ers began speculating on an early
heavyweight title match for
die. He punished Valdez with
ripping body attack in the
rounds, and rendered him
in the eighth with a
right to the stomach. Nino had
be revived with smelling salts.
None of the top contenders, in¬
cluding Moore, has been able
knock Valdez out. A clever boxer
who punches to the head and body,
Maehen is unlike the crop of cur¬
rent head hunters. He packs a
knockout wallop in either hand.
Trained early in his career by
Dave Mills, an uncle whom Eddie
claims defeated Luis Angel Firpo,
he is well grounded in the funda¬
mentals of fist fighting. He has
closely followed the careers of
Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Rob¬
inson.
Eddie Mills Maehen started box¬
ing in 1951. He had just three
unateur bouts, winning two by
knockouts and drawing the other,
before turning pro in 1955. He
was active for four years, and
inally on March 22, 1955, began
his pro career with a one-round
knockout of Raul FTores in Sac¬
ramento.
A convincing win over the then
highly touted Julio Mederos of
Cuba early this year, established
him as leading heavyweight.
Since then he has run up a string
of 15 straight victories, including
a 10 round decision over Valdez
last April 16. He has never been
beaten, either as a professional
or amateur. .....—-----* „
And if he loses at all Maehen
is confident none of the leading! I
contenders will defeat him. Said
he about the current heavyweight
contenders:
have watched all of them—
Jackson, Patterson, Baker, Hoi
man ‘ Moore > and I fear none of
hem.”
Many experts predict that the
lusky warrior with the prominent
forehead and cleancut features is
a sure bet to win the heavyweight
