Ala. Negroes
r o Right To
Vote March
MOTGONMERY, Ala., (ANP)
More than 300 Negroes from
•two counties here marched on their
r c s p e e t. i v e voting registration
boards last week in an all-out ef¬
fort to exercise their constitution-
■ ll nrivileve of becoming voters.
Meanwhile the boards, operated
by whites, came up with a variety
of tactics designed to keep Negroes
from qualifying; as voters.
Negro citizens from Montgomery
and Elmore counties swarmed into
their boards of registrars and
made application to vote in the tvvo
counties. Some fiO Negroes were
reported to have made applica¬
tion in Elmore county.
The chairman of the board here,
Mr.;. ('. B. Willis said there was
1 “steady stream” of Negro appli¬
cants last week. A Negro busi¬
nessman and chairman of the Vot¬
er Registration Committee of the
Montgomery Improvement Asso¬
ciation . pent the entire day usher¬
ing: the applicants in. lie is Rufus
Lewis, who gave the voter appli¬
cants hist minute instructions.
At the same time stalling tactic
were employed by the E 1 m n r <
County board and a board ir
Tuskegee’s Macon County. The
chairman of the Elmore board said
that “we hud move Negroes apply
today than the total Negro appli¬
cation during the past two years.”
At the Macon County board in
Tuskegee, doors of registration
boards were immediately closed
upon the appearance of Negro ap¬
plicants.
