Sft. Curry Speaks
A* P.' llsen
In writing aliout thbir careers
n the Occupational Guidance
lasses, many of the boys and girls
ixpressed the desire to join some
■ranch of the military service. Mrs.
Phelma W. Stiles, teacher of the
mbject, wanted them to know ex¬
actly what to expect of a military
areer. In keeping with this iilea,
we invited Sgt. Curry, Station
Commander of the U. S. Army
Recruiting Office for the Savan¬
nah District, to come and speak
to us.
The Assembly was held Friday,
May 24, at Bunn's Memorial Bap¬
tist Church. The audience sang
“Whispering Hope,” after which
we chanted the Lord’s Prayer. De-
lores Cannady introduced the
speaker.
Sgt. Curry has been an Army
recruiting officer for the past nine
years, so he was well informed
on military affairs. His speech
was wonderfully inspiring and we
deeply appreciated and enjoyed it.
The students were impressed with
his sincere manner, his interest¬
ing delivery, and with the facts
he imparted. He was emphatic in
letting the students know that the
Army is no place for drifters. The
standards for admission are be¬
coming higher and higher as the
Army itself becomes mote and
more technical in this atomic age.
He did not frighten the students
out of the idea. He simply inspired
them fo work harder.
The Girls’ Ensemble sang “The
Beils of St. Mary’s” and Harriet
Bias sang “Sometimes i Feel Like
a Motherless Child.” The music
was under the direction of Miss
G. I.. Golden.
Miss M. W. Maree, our princi¬
pal, made a wonderful contribu¬
tion by re-emphasizing what' Sgt.
Curry had said and by graciously
thanking him. We closed by sing¬
ing the School Song. Mary C. |
Boles was emcee for the program.
