Negro Judges
CHICAGO — Members of
Cook County Bar Association
this tveek went on record as
demanding more Negro
to sit as judges in the
com ts of the city.
Speaking for the 400 mem¬
bers of the association, Edward
B. Toles, chairman of the com¬
mittee on public affairs, said:
"Many persons in our commun¬
ity here in Cook County, 111.,
and in the nation, have little
knowledge of the Negro law-
yers' demand for more
sc rotation in the
branches of government par-
ticularly the Judiciary and
other administrative positions,
both elective and
available exclusively for law¬
yers.'’
Tn support of their conten¬
tion for more representation on
judicial benches, the Bar group
cited the following
1. No Negro has ever served
on the Federal Bench in the
country’s history.
2. Of the 109 municipal, state
and federal judges serving in
Chicago, only three are Negroes
—one in Circuit Court and two
in Municipal Court — although
Negroes account for about 20
percent of Chicago's 4 million

Burglarized

The local home of hospitalized
Rep. Adam C. Powell, Jr., re¬
covering in Bethesda (Md.)
Naval hospital from an appen¬
dectomy, has been burglarized.
According to an aide of the
congressman a confidential po¬
litical memorandum was stolen
after the thief or thieves had
gone through all of Powell's
personal papers.
A similar burglary was re¬
ported by Powell about six
years ago, on the eve of a pri¬
mary election.
Missing was a reportedly
secret report prepared by J
Raymond Jones, Powell’s cam¬
paign manager during the 1953
primary campaign in which the
colorful congressman defeated
decisively New York City Coun¬
cilman Earl Brown.
Jones is currently pushed by
Rep. Powell for the Democrat¬
ic leadership in the Manhattan
district.
Also stolen were two gold
watches belonging to the legis¬
lator.

Corporation serving as a pro¬
prietor of a half-million dollar
motor hotel and exclusive
nightclub, Jekyll Island prom¬
ises to be a year-round resort
for Negroes as well as whites.
Whiter Thomas is the general
manager of the Dolphin Club
and Motor Hotel which is op¬
erated by the St. Andrew's
Beach Corporation. William
Randall,a builder and Investor
of Macon, is president.
In an exclusive interview
with this writer Sunday, Wal¬
ter Thomas, general manager,
revealed that another 50 unit
addition will be constructed
immediately. The architect Is
already completing all of the
preliminary requirements and
construction should start with¬
in the next thirty days. In dis¬
cussing other developments on
Jekiyll Island, Mr. Thomas
pointed out that the Jekyll
Island Authority is constructing
an auditorium' which will ac¬
comodate several thousand peo¬
ple. This auditorium will be
available to Negro groups as
well as whites. This will enable
this state park to be suitable
for various types of conven¬
tions and meetings. Mr Tho¬
mas further stated that camp¬
ing quarters will be available
for Boy Scouts and other
camping units.

ST. LOUIS-(ANP) — Mrs.
Elizabeth Sanders, 75 year old
widow of Louis Sanders, one of
the first Negro uniformed po¬
licemen in the city, reported
to police last week that a man
she had known for four months
and to whom she was engaged,
disappeared with $2,350 of her
savings.
She told police she withdrew
the money from her savings
and loan account to help make
a down payment on a home in
Granite City. She and the man,
whose name was withheld, were
to be married the following
day but it didn't happen.
In her account, she said the
