Bethlehem Center
Hanging of the Greens
The first annual Hanging of
the Greens and Candle Light
ing ceremony was held on Fri-
d a y evening at Bethlehem
Community Center. Sprays of
greens and wreaths made by
the children were placed on
the mantles and windows. A
Christmas wish which had been
decided upon by members of
each club was made by a re¬
presentative of each group. A
large white candle signifying
the Spirit of Christmas was the
central candle from which each
representative lighted his can¬
dle as the wish was made
Preceding the candle lighting
Miss Jeanette Blakely, staff
member in charge of the cere¬
mony, told the story of the
Hanging of the Greens and
Christmas tree.
The following club represen¬
tatives participated: Roger
Blake, Jerome Baker, Sandra
Polite, Linda Walker, Helen
Beil, and J. T. Biakman. Mrs
F. Bland lighted a candle for
the parents. Mrs. M. A. Ayrer
read a poem, “The Legend of
Befana," and lighted a candle
as representative of the board
of directors. Miss Madeline
Shivery who is also a board
member, was present. Christ¬
mas carols were sung by the
Sing it for Fun music group
under the direction of Miss
Mary Louise Rose. Miss Jose¬
phine Beckwith brought greet¬
ings from the staff. Refresh¬
ments were served following the
program.
Parents' Club
The Parents' Club of the Beth¬
lehem Community Day-Care
Center held Its annual Christ¬
mas party on Thursday even¬
ing at Bethlehem Community
Center. Approximately forty
parents and their guests en¬
joyed a delightful evening
playing games and singing
Christmas carols. The center
was decorated with Christmas
greens, bells, and candles. The
large Christmas tree had beer,
decorated by one of the girls'
clubs. Following the party there
was an exchange of gifts.

had been planned by the p o
gram committee. The member 1
of the committee are: Mrs, L
J. Ladson, chairman; Mrs. Jua
nita Jackson, Mrs. Clark am
Mrs. Brown. Mrs. C. Allen if
staff adviser. Following the
games and gift exchange re
ifreshments were served buffet
style from beautifully arranged
tables decorated with CJirist
mas balls and candles. Th<
refreshments were planned and
served by the social committee
The committee members are
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Vaughn
chairman, and L. J. Ladson
Mrs. Henrietta Meeks is presi¬
dent. Miss Madeline Shivery, a
member of the Bethlehem Com¬
munity Center board, was one
of the guests.
Miss Beckwih Returns
■ Miss Josephine Beckwith, di¬
rector of Bethlehem Community
Center and Day-Care Center
has returned from New York
City where she attended a
meeting of the Urban Advisory
Committee held at the new
Inter-Church headquarters or
Riverside Drive. One of the
functions of the committee is
to plan and evaluate in-service
training institutes held for
agency board presidents, pro¬
gram directors ,and executive
directors. Other items of busi¬
ness included agency participa¬
tion in the Jane Addams Cen¬
tennial which will be observed
In 1960; new issues confront¬
ing Community Center work
such as mobility of population,
the multiple problem family,
and special issues in certain
regions of the country. There
are ten members on the com¬
mittee.
Miss Beckwith had brief vis¬
its with friends in Philadelphia
and spoke at Mt. Zion Metho-
