visit, she was given an audition
over a local radio station, at
which time she was highly com¬
plimented by Johnny Mercer, the
Savannah born famous popular

HERBERT (HERB) FLEMING
of New York City is visiting his
cousin, Mrs. Henrietta E. Gaston
of 005 W. 39th St. A native Sa¬
vannahian, Mr. Fleming left Sa¬
vannah at the age of seven years
and this is his first visit during
the past five decades. He is a
trombonist, a lyric tenor, and a lec¬
turer. He traveled around world
4 times. During World War I
he played with the 369th Infantry
Band. He is now manager of the
Herb Fleming’s Internationales
(a group of eight musicians). His
mother, the late Mrs. Sadie Flem¬
ing, resided at 516 East Hertry
Street prior to her death.

O. JOHNSON celebrated their
sixth wedding anniversary on Dec¬
ember 23 in England. Their in¬
fant daughter celebrated her first
birthday on January 2 and made
her first trip to London, England
on January 3. The Family sent
greetings to Mrs. Johnson’s
Mother, Mrs. Geneva Stokes, who
celebrated her birthday on Dec¬
ember 28. Congratulations to all!
Mrs. Johnson still holds the pre¬
sidency of the NCO Club in her
area of which she is the only
Negro membre. She attended an
International Conference in Ox¬
ford, England, of all club presi¬
dents in the area of which Prince
Phillip is chairman. She met many
interesting persons including Mrs.
Dorothy Laird, the famous British
author. She has recently visited
Copenhagen, Denmark and sev¬
eral cities, in ltaiy. Mrs. Johnson
is the former Miss Beuye Stokes,
EUGENE A. STEVENS, JR. of
New York City is spending a' four
weeks vacation in the city visiting
his mother, Mrs. Helen D. Stevens,
and grandmother, Mrs. Agnes J.
Bryan, of 223 West King Street.
Mrs. Stevens was recently a pat¬
ient at Memorial Hospital. Mr.
Stevens, a former carrier of the
Savannah Tribune is now employ¬
ed as a baker and cake finisher
in New York City.

brate Founders’ day of the Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority Saturday, Jan¬

Sunday after spending the holi¬
days in New Y’ork City with her
son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Louis Johnson; and in Wash¬
ington, D. C., with her brothers
and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Johnson and Mr. and Mrs.
Charlie Johnson. While in Wash¬
ington she also visited her nep¬
hew and niece, Mr. and Mrs.
George Johnson.
YMCA Activities
Groups of young people from
the various schools of the commun¬
ity meet each Saturday from 10:00
to 12:00 at the West Broad St.
YMCA to participate in the phy¬
sical education program directed
by Mrs. Ella Fisher of Savannah
State College. An application has
been made to the National YMCA
Physical Education Committee, to
enroll in the 1960 YMCA Athletic
Achievement program.
Sustaining membership workers
under the leadership of Mrs. Bessie
Fleming will meet this week at the
YMCA, to receive their material
and pep talks given by Dr. Cole¬
ridge A. Braithwaite, general
chairman, and Dr. E. K. Williams,
co-chairman. The top leadership
committee met Saturday, Jan. 9,
and set a goal of $10,000 for this
year’s effort. The committee has
set a time of two weeks for the
sustaining part of the enrollment,
and six weeks for the general soli¬
citation which will began Feb. 4.

The attractive home of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Simmons, Sr., 107
Bouhan Ave., was picturesque
Saturday evening, Jan. 9, honoring
their oldest son, Robert Jr., on his
thirteenth birthday. The happy
hour began at six and climaxed at
10 o’clock.
The color scheme was blue and I
white. A huge birthday cake was
the center of attraction on the din¬
ing room table surrounded by
sandwiches, candy, peanuts and j
gum. Pictures were taken
of the guests and as happy birth¬
day was sung, Robert recorded it
on a tape recorder that was a gift |
from his father. Balloons, noise I
makers and hats were given as j
souvenirs. A lovely repast was I
served. Many greetings and gift., j
received.

annual Christmas Decoration con¬
