PAGE SSC Tigers Win SEAC Tournament The Savannah State College Timers won their second consecu¬ tive SEAT Tournament by beating Florida Normal in the final, $02-76. The leading scorers for fhe Tigers were Hedel! Walton, 4vith 33 and Ira Jackson, 24. For Florida Normal, Bill McDougald with 29 and Scott Perry, 25. The half-time scores were 15-34, in favor of SSC Timers. Walton, Jack- son, McDougald, Perry and James Davis of Claflin made the first team in the all-tournament selec¬ tion. Jackson of Savannah was chosen as the most valuable play¬ er in the tournament. Claflin won over Morris College, 76-74 in a five minutes overtime for consolation. Starting the first half for the champions were four members of the ‘‘Sophomore Five” and Robert Robbins, the only senior on the team. The others were Jackson, Walton, Willie Tate and James Dix,on. For Florida Normal, Mc¬ Dougald, Perry, A. Powell, J. Wil- Jiam and A. Jones. Both team started the first half off being verv “hot” as they were tied 12-12, with the game five minutes old. W ith the first half eight minutes old, Perry and McDougald of Florida had cut Savannah State College Tigers' half-time lead down to five points. At this time the Tigers sent in the other member of the “Sopho¬ more Five”, Stephen Kelly, a 5-10” guard who is a flashy, smooth hall handler, and he really got the team moving. In fact, he had six assists in five minutes. Kelly was the spark at this time because his opponents did not know what he was going to do with the hall j when he had possession of it. Kelly also shot 10 points in this half. With 55 seconds left in the game, | Walton hit the Century mark with I a 12 foot jump shot. Liberty County High Wins District Tourney The girls and boys basketball teams of Liberty County High school. McIntosh, Ga., ended th“ 1959-60 season as top teams in District 11, Class A. The girls went to the tour¬ ney with a record of 16-1 to prove that they are the tigers from Liberty county. They were top seated in the tourney, defeating Woodbine. They met Tattnall county's girls in the finals with a score of 48-21. The boys’ team defeated Da¬ rien in their first game which put them in the bracket oppo¬ site Woodbine. After defeat¬ ing Woodbine, the Tigers played Pius X of Savannah in the championship game—wtih put them on top with a score of 51-54. S. L. Smith, principal of Lib¬ erty County High school, says it is a double thrill to have two championship teams from his school. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Ellis are coaches of the teams.
