Dear Sir:
“We, the members of the Chat¬

passing of the ordinance on
last Friday, May 6, 1960 which
forbids citizens from organiz¬
ing or promoting activities rel¬
ative to protests, especially
since it is directed against the
Negro in his non-violent strug¬
gle for freedom, justice and
equality. By your taking part

your inability to deal fairly with
all the citizens.
“All of your actions, state¬
ments and television appearan¬
ces have been directed at break-
| ing down and destroying the
Negro’s protest against injustice
1 without making any attempt
j to bring them together with the
merchants for any kind of j

( t Incidents , of violence
I that alleged have happened
you
to Negro shoppers attendant to
the boycott and picketing seem
to be ungrounded since the
shopping area has been and
now is heavily patrolled by law
enforcement officers who would
have been in a position to ap¬
prehend and arrest any perpe¬

But we have noted very care¬
fully that there has been no
mention of arrest of any perpe¬

any incidents as you say, they
were not committed by any per¬

have been victims of violence
ourselves.
''Therefore, the Chatham

plores and condemns the action
of the Mayor and City Council
as being unfair, undemocratic,
and unconstitutional and un¬
