Receives
Award for Farm Improvcm’t
Maurice W. Coleman, Negro ag¬
ricultural agent of Bertie County,
N. C., was presented a Superior
Service Award here Tuesday by
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra
Taft Benson,
The presentation was made dur¬
ing ceremonies on the Washington
Monument Grounds where 110
others also were honored. Seven
of these received awards for di
tinguished service, 81 for superior
service, and 22 for tenures of
40 years or more. !
Among those in the latter group j
was one retired colored employee,
John r. Peterson, a former labora-
tory aide in the Department’s!
Eastern Utilization Research and
Development Division just outside
Philadelphia.
Forty-one other awards for
length of service and 13 unit cita-
tions will be presented later at
the headquarters of the employees.
One of the unit awards is for
distinguished service, and the
others for superior service.
Mr. Coleman, who lias been with
the North Carolina Extension S;-r
vice for 10 years, received the Su¬
perior Service Award for a num-
ber of important achievements re-'
latmg to improved hyiug stand-
ards for the farm people of Bertie
County. |
Over the past 19 years he has !
helped colored farmers of the co- i
unty to increase their corn yield |
f'rom an average of only 21 bushels
per acre to 56, their tobacco from 1
978 pounds to 1,670, and their pea-
nuts from 1,150 to 1,850 pounds
per acre.
When Mr. Coleman began work
in the county, very few farmers
had hogs or cattle. Today, one-
third of these farmers are produc¬
ing livestock for market. And
Anderson and Burroughs
Sts. Closed to Traffic
On Monday the intersection of
Anderson Street and Burroughs
Street was closed to all traffic.
It will remain closed at least two
weeks and perhaps a month while
major repair is done on the under¬
ground drainage system.
During this time the blocks of
Anderson Street between West
Broad and Burroughs and between
Burroughs and Cuylcr Streets will
carry two way traffic, serving
only the residents in these blocks.
Henry Street between West
Broad Street and Magnolia Street
will carry two way traffic instead
of the normal westbound traffic-
only.
Most of the northbound traffic-
on Ogc-echc-e Road, which would
normally use Anderson Street, will
find it more convenient to use
37th Street.
The No. 12 buses which nor¬
mally go eastward on Anderson
Street will go north on Cuylcr
Street, east on Henry Street, and
south on West Broad to Ander¬
son Street. This route will be
marked also as a uctour route lor
other traffic.
