REDDICK IT’S TIME TO PLAY THE RECORD FORWARD By J. Reddick Some one has told a story of a little boy who experiment¬ ed upon his record player to see how it would sound playing a song backward. Certainly did not rv get r. 4 harmony. K n ’pwl nvit/ T In n addi¬ a rl tion 'to disharmony the ma¬ chine was wrecked. It is not hard to see why he did not get har- j mony, no more than it is to see why the machine was wrecked i It was not designed to play backward, but to play forward. There are many of us who refuse to learn that persons and things are designed for purposes. Both persons and things are sometimes abused by being used in opposites to true purposes. The results are as- true as in the case of the rec¬ ord player; disharmony and are Sure to follow. The Deists say in substance, God made the world but after¬ ward he winded it up and went away and left it on its own. I think that God’s hand is still working in his Creation to develop it into the best that it can become. To attempt to do the opposite with that which God has designed is an at¬ tempt to “Play the song back¬ ward.” There are those among us who insist on becoming tempo¬ rary artificial in order to “en¬ joy life.” But people were not designed to become artificial, not even by intoxicant drirnks. Fatalities, especially on holidays, testify to this assertion. If there is any one thing that we need in our world today it is soberness. It takes much more soberness than we have in this world today to save it from disaster. There are forces among us today which se’dfc to avert moves to promote Brotherhood. This is certainly another way of at¬ tempting to “Flay the record backward.” The same evil from which one people suffers is a threat to another people. None are safe as long as any evil invades another people. We come to this assertion that we are our brother’s keeper. It is quite easy to understand a child’s experimenting on playing a song backward, but it is difficult for me to under-: stand id how how '“mature” -mature - persons persons. can let themselves over and over on in oxican drinks, and resisting Brother- hood of mankind, as important as these are in human affairs. When will we learn that there Is a right way? When will we learn to play the record for¬ ward? of Mr. and Mrs. Curry Daivs, left July 2nd for Philadelphia to spend the summer with atives. I , WILMETTE, 111. — Baha'is 1 throughout the world will ob¬ serve the 110th anniversary of the death of the Bab, prophet- of their Faith on Satur¬ day, July 9. This day is compar¬ able to Good Friday, anniversary of Christ’s crucifixion, according Charles Charles Wolcott, Wolcott, secretary secretary of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United' States. Although only ui.ij 30 years old at — the time he was executed by a firing squad In in Tabriz, r Pnk»‘!'7 Iran.the Tran f no Bab witnessed the acceptance of his teachings by thousands of Iranians. He taught that “the w'orld is one country and mankind its citi¬ zens; there is only one religion and all the prophets have’ taught it.” In an age of corruption, the Bab stressed the importance of truth. Surrounded by civic and legal intrigue, he demanded re¬ vised laws to protect the inno¬ cent and dispense justice. He re- gftrded the condition of Iranian women, who lived in degraded seclusion, as a blot on tHe ; entire country and urged education for both sexes. By his own business practice, prior to his persecution and imprisonment, the Bab set an example of scrupulous cour¬ tesy and fairness.
