Mr. Patton
Addresses
19th NAACP
(Contlr.uerr rrom Page Orm)
rot going to run from the Ku
Klnx Klan, Ucv. Patterson
stated.
Jesse L. Koarse, II, a student
at Savannah State College,
sang two musical selection.
Cody Thomas, chairman of the
NAACP Registration committee,
made remarks regarding the jm -
portanee of registering and vot¬
ing.
The appeal for funds was
made by Mrs. F.thel Luten, pres¬
ident of the NAACP Women’s
Auxiliary. Members
of fib is A u x il i a r y sang a
“Freedom Song” in the tune of
“We are Marching To 7ion’‘
during the collection of funds.
TCe words of this song were
composed by Mrs. Lhten. The
ladies were in complete charge
of the collection. .
Rev. Franklin Hill, the pastor
of the Seventh Ray Adventist
Church, gave a few remarks
and invited those present to
attend the meeting at his
churcih next Sunday.
Rev. Curtis J. Jackson,
tor of the First African
Church, introduced the
er, W. C. Patton, NAACP field
worker for the Southwide Reg-
Lstration Drive. Rev. Jackson
stated that Mr. Patton was
able to plane on the
tion books 72,000 Negroes in
Memphis, Tenn., and that his
job has taken him throughout
the South to obtain more Ne-
gro voters.
A dynamic speaker, Mr. Pat¬
ton said there are new fron¬
tiers that must be possessed,
These frontiers will be conquer¬
ed if one treads upon them ;rnd
possesses them. , There will
opposition, and therefore,, .w.p
must fight for the frontiers.
Negroes are challenged to pos¬
sess tthe following new frontiers:
Government, in which Negroes
shall hold offices; secondly, the
area of the .sports frontier:
third, education, very very fevp few of o
the schools are desegregated,
fourth, employment, in which
Negroes are denied many ’joM
in tihe south; fifth, frahs^cfi 1 -
tation, although Negroes may
ride desegregated, they contin¬
ue to ride in the back seats.
Regarding the frontier of gov¬
ernment, Mr. Patton said that
less than 3 percent of the
fice holders are Negroes. This
does not coincide with our pop¬
ulation size. It is the fault of
th e Negro, because, for
in Savannah, there is not
office holder. Less than
percent of tlic Negro popula-
tion are voters. One may feel
that one vote will not help, but
one vote elected .a president of
the United States, the speaker
said.
Voting is relatively new to
Negroes in the South becaiikb
the white man has told the Ne¬
gro that politics is dirty. If
politics is dirty let the Chris-
tian get in and clean up
itics. the field worker said. “We
■are in politics all of our lives,
because when one is born
has to have a birth certificate,
and he must have a death cer-
tificate when he dies.”
The Negro has done well in
many cities in the South. Re¬
ferring to Memphis, Mir. Pat¬
ton said that he was happy be-
cause 72.000 Negroes vote
now. Atlanta Negroes
Mayor Hartfield in office in At-
lanta. Three Negroes are on
the eity council in Nashville,
Charlotte, N. C. Negroes
made progress. There are many
barriers for example in
Carolina where they have
groes to read the
before voting. In Alabama,
there are thirty questions to
answer; some of these ques¬
tions are ridiculous. Some Ne¬
groes are ambushed before re¬
turning borne in Alabama. In
other cities in Alabama the KKK
burned 100 crosses in one night
In Mississippi, Negroes are
ject to all kinds of economic
reprisals. In Gaston county.
Florida where Negroes had their
names on the registration books,
their houses were shot into ev¬
ery night about 3 a. m.
Turning to Louisiana, the
speaker said that Negroes are
asked stupid questions which
keep Negroes from voting. In
Fayette County, Term., a
county v/here Negroes
l ave registered are not able
buy merchandise. The
groes are deprived , of
clott ing, and other items.
N. A. A. C. P. has made an ap¬
peal all over the country
food and clothing for these
; people.
S Tn Selma, Ala., Attorney Fred
. Gray, while waiting in the court
| house, had a pint of gin plant¬
ed in his car. Mr.
driver was’ jailed.
The speaker asked all
. present who live in
j County to register to vote. “If
you don’t register and vote
i in Chatham Geunty you are no*
| worth the salt-.in your
Mr. 'PaU't’a said. Eloquently

used the words of James V/el-
don Johnson and quoted the
immortal, “Lift Every
and Sing.”
