A Story ot a H oman An English paper en.y An incident is just i>" in military ciroh s, so extraordinary that, j wore not it3 truth vouched lor by official authority, the narration would certainly’ : be deemed absolutely in credible. Our 1 officers quartered at the Cape, Home fifteen or twenty years uro, may remember a j certain Dr. Hurry, attached to tho medical j O O Xj TTIWHEITJ’19, O a t| 1 staff there, and enjoying a reputation toj considerable skill in his profession, e»pe- 1 •!• J. iMcKcildree’S Old Stand ! cially for firmness, decision arul rapidity 1 * in difficult operations. This gentle run OPPOSITE COLUMBUS DANK BUILDING. | had entered the army in 1813, had passed j of course through the grades ol* assistant i j surgeon and surgeon in tho various rogi- j nients, and had served as such in various i quarters of tiie globe, ills professional j acquirements, had procured lor him his I promotion to tho staff at tho Cape. Ho was clever and agreeable, savo tor tho drawback of u most quarrelsome temper, and an inordinate addiction to argument, which perpetually brought tho former peculiarity into play, lie was excessively plain, of feeble proportions, and labored under tho imperfection of a ludicrously squeaking voice. Any natural “chafing" with regard to those, however, especially aroused bis ire, but was at length discon tinued on his “calling out" a persevering offender and shooting him through the lungs. About 1840 he became peomotod to be medical inspector, and was transferred to Malta. There ho was equally distin guished by his skill, and by his pugna cious propensities, the latter becoming so inconveniently developed upon the slight est difference ot opinion with him, that at last no notice whs allewod to ho taken of bis fits of temper. Ho proceeded from Malta to Corfu, where ho was quartered for many years, still conspicuous f«*r hid peculiarities. When our Government ceded tho Ionian Islands to Greece, and our troops, of course, quitlod tho territory, Dr. Burry elected to leave the army and take up his residence for the rest of his days at Corfu, lie them about a month ago, und upon his death was discovered to bo a woman! Very probably tlm fact was elicited during the natural prepara tions for interment, but them seems to be an idoa prevalent that nituer verbally, during the last illness, or by some writing perused immediately after hi* (for we must still uso tlm “masculine’‘) death, he had bogged to bi buried without a pp»l mortem examination of any sort. This, most likely, only aroused the cu riosity of the two nurses who atlondcd him, for it whs to them, it appears, that the disclosuro of this mystery is owing. Under the eirqfptnrtanccs, the tact was doomed so important that medjcal testi mony was called in to report upon and record its truth. By this investigation not only was the assertion placed beyond a doubt, but it was equally beyond a doubt brought to light that tho individual in question had some time or another boon a mother. This is oil that is as yet known of this extraordinary story. The motives that occasioned and tho time whon commenced this singular deception are both shrouded in mystery. But thus it stands an indubitable fact, that a woman was for forty years an officer iti tho Brit ish service, had fought one duel, ar.d had sought many more, had pursued u legiti mate medical education, bad received a regular diploma, and had acquired almost a celebrity for skill as a surgical operator. 13‘ STAPLE AND FANCY DRY GOODS, DRESS GOODS, Handkerchiefs, Hosiery, GLOVES, HOOP SKIRTS, BLANKETS, HATS, CAPS, UMBRELLAS, SHOES, BOOTS, READY MADE CLOTHING, SHIRTS, DRAWERS. Oot 4,1865-lm A Curious Musician.—The Italian organ grinders dosorted Philadelphia two years ago. Their hegira was expedited by the complications id the draft and tho Garibaldi suecosses over the Imperialists at home. The reverses over the Italian revolution, and tho restoration of peace to our own land, have caused a reflux of emigration from the Levant, aVid tho or gan grinders havo nearly all roturned,im proved by travel and the martial strains of camp and field. Tho sound of tho portable*harmoniums and hand-organs, silent for two years, may again bo heard along the streets. Tho chief of tho musi cians of tho pave is a short, blaek-cyed, wild-haired Milanese, who 1ms crested an excitonient among tho patrons of Italian organs and Savoy monkeys, lie plays at one timo three instruments, and uses them with fine effect. With one hand he plays a hurdy-gurdy, supported by a stout tr- hen prop; with the other ho holds a Pan- doan harp to his mouth, while with his foot he beats a drumstick against a heavy drum dependant from his shoulders. Tho concert of the throe instruments is singu larly effective, and tho shrill strains of tho mouth-harp, mingling with the muffled roll of tho drum and the clear noto of the hurdy-gurdy,gather an impromptu ctowd in any of tho city thoroughfares. The Milanese is the only maestro we over knew who combined a whole band in his own person, and was at the same time or ganist, harper and drummer. His skill is winning for him daily substantial rewards of his ability, an# he intends shortly to build a block of houses for his follow- craftsmen on ono of tho open commons of the first ward.—Philadelphia yews. Air. Greeley, as is well known to his friends, says the New York correspond ent of tho Cincinnati Gazette, is very fond of a dry joke on almost any subject, and ir. his love of jest does not even spare what is cailod the divine institution-mat rimony. A young man went to him not long since for advice, and informed tho journalist that lie had thought seriously of settling in North Carolina, where, it appeared to him there was a good opening for youthful energy and enterprise. “Don’t do it,” said Horace, emphatically; “don’t do it; my friend. i went there once myself, onco too often indeed; 1 found my wife there. Take my advice, young man, and keep out of North Caro lina.” Tho Charleston Mercury is about to be republished; R. B. Rliott is the incom ing editor.
