With eartly happiness replete, Was that love-lightod home, It knew no dark, foreboding fear, No dream of ill to oome, And yet. It came,—as falls the bolt From an unolonded sky; God's fiat bid the light be quenched. The joy in sorrow die. Oh Thou, whose ways are iu the deep; Whom clouds enoompass round, Thy love was veiled in darkness then, Unsearchable, profound. And whon we saw the seal of Death Upon the mother's brow: And mourning o'er the perfect wife, The strioken husband bow, Strong need we had of holy faitb^ Upon Thy word to loan. And feel that mercy dealt the stroke, And trust the lovo unsoen. And when we saw the first-born son— That father’s joy, his pride— Ere closed another day, lie down, Cold by his mother's side, Amaxed and stunned, with speechless awe, We bowed before Thy might, And strove to say: " Doth not the Judge Of all the earth do right?" And yet, Thou wait not doneagain The dreaded angel cast The shadow of his wings across That cirole narrowing fast, And in his arms he took the babe Whose smiles that home haul blest; And now the blessed spirit liee Upon its mother’s breast. New York, September 30, The largenosa of the import of dry woo naturally attracts attention, but as yet it h not been found that the supply is in exoess of out tho season, and prioes have raled very firm and high. The total receipts at this poKfor the four weeks of September have been $11,- 98,257, against $4,147,419 for the same period of lost year. The receipts for the past week amounted to $3,129,787 against $917,990, for the c rresponding week of last year. The auotions of the past week have been well attended, and goods bare realised high prices, exoept Saiany arena goods aud low priced English worsted labrio', which are in excessive supply, and have sold at lower prices, in domestic cotton goods the market has shown a general recovery of tone and prices during the week- The marking down of prioes a few days ago by some leading jobbers, was, no doubt, simply a bear triok. and as auoh it was successful. The parties to it then bought up everything they could lay their bands on in certain scarce styles of goous. The G rioes consequently rebounded and the late ears are npw in turn Bulls, and are realising handsome profits upon their purohases dr -t — the depression. During the week about the reduction inode during tbs previous' has been recovered, and the market closes _ and with a good, steady demand for goods, the stock in jobbers’ hands being exceedingly scarce. , .
