this city, has gono back to his old pro
fession—the law—and has opened his
office in Montgomery, Ala. Our sister
city is fortunate in uttrnctiug to her bar
uchaninn as Col. Johnson, lie will
make his mark among Alabama's ablest
men.
Mrs. Mary L. Jonos offers for sale a
fine orchard of choice fruit, four miles
from the city. Nothing is more promo
tive of health, or pays the ’’cultivator
better, than good fruit. Mrs. Jones
wants to get a good gardener.

couaty, Ala., announce him as a candi
date for Congress from their district.
Mr. Monroe Baker, of Crawford, Ain.,
is announced as a candidate for Clerk of
the Circuit Court of Bussell county.
Hr, Baker makes an efficient officer, and
his friends will do woll to retain him in

Information having reached these Head*
Quarters that private arms have in some instan
ces been seized by the Military Authorities in
this Department, it is therefore ordered:
I. That private arms, suoh as sporting guns,
pistols, Ac., (other than Colt's Navy revolvers,)
will in no cases be taken from peaceable persons
making no improper use thereof.
II. The side arms of paroled offices of the
late so-called Confederate Army, will not be
taken from their owners so long as their paroles
are observed.
III. All other Confederate or United Stateg
arms of any description, suoh as Muskets, Car
bines, Swords, Colt's Navy revolvers. Jfco., will
at once bo seized together with the ammunition
therefor, and all perrons having andconoealing
tho same, upon disoovery, will be promptly ar
rested and summarllv punished.
IV. Assistant Provost Marshals throughout
this Department are charged with the execu
tion of this order.

1. To prevent starvation and death amonr
the fieed people during the rapidly appioaoh-
ing winter, officers and agents of thiq Bureau
will make immediate and vigorous efforts to
provido all freed people, who may bo out of
employment,with opportunities for labor where
fair compensation and kind treatment will ho
seoured to them. This is the only praotioable
and comprehensive plan of providing for their
necessities, and to this all homes, asylums, hos-
E itals or other modcB of furnishing relief will
e regarded as subsidiary and for temporary
use only.
2d. In all the larger cities, and where prac
ticable in Sub-Districts, a census will be taken
of the freed profile, showing the name, present
and former residence, sox, age, occupation!

kind of persons wanted—the kind ot employ

5th. Unfortunately, there is a widespread be
lief amo' g tbe freed people of this State, that
at Christmas there is to be a distribution of
property umong them, and under this impres
sion they aro refusing to make ocn tracts for
the coming year. All officers and agents ot this
Bureau are directed, and other officers of the
army throughout the Stato, ure eardeatly re
quested to exert themselves to convince the
freed people thai they are utterly mistuken,
and that no such distribution will take place at
Christmas, or at any other time, and to indece
them to enter into contracts now. that they
may not, at the .end of the year, be in a condi
tion to entail severe suffering on themselves,
their fumilies, and upon tho community.
Gth. Contracts for this year, however made,
verbal or otherwise, will not be interfered with,
exoept to compel, if neoessary, both parties to
comply in good faith with their agreements,
and to settle disputes when they may arise.
Contracts for next year will be made in writing.
The form of controct usually adopted reads os
follows:

other burden. The Bureau refuses to fix a price
for labor or allow it to be done by any commu
nity or combination of people, but leaves labor,
like any other commodity, t > sell itself, in the
open market to tbe highest bidder. In case the
employers’ circumstances are suoh as to make
it doubtful whether or not they will have the
means necessary to enable them to comply with
their pari of the oontract. good and sufficient
sureties to the bond will be required, or wages
will be secured by a lieu on tho crops or land.
These contracts must be inado in duplioate
and approved by an officer of the Bureau, or
nearest Provost Marshal, who should also, if
possible, witness the signatures of all tbe panics
and explain to them the terms, conditions and
probable results of tbe contract. In all the
cases the officer will inform the parties that,
having of their own free will Joined in the con
tract, they will be compelled if necessary to
comply in good faith with its terms and condi
tions. They will especially impress upon the
laborer that ho is to work unuei the direction
of hi* employer, to be industrious and faithful,
and not to leave the plantation or pltwe of his
employment without permission, unless he is
treated with cruelty.
Parents are responsible forthoir children, the
