The receipts from tho coun ty wagon, seem to bo sightly in- ,in K* This, however, is probably aUble only to the stimulus of advanc- pricef, for wc hear that tbc concur- treport U that there is very littlo cot- 13 country. By far tho larger por strings of some sort of herb intermingled , with dried roots, their eyes Hosed ; iho j master of ceremonies or llinli Fetish Priest, with a snake-skin around hi* neck, and bis wool griz/. o«l with ago and garnished more profusely than the rest, was chanting something in a droning voice, while tho remainder of the “eun- f jregation” respondc.4 as it were, with a ow and long drawn howl. Tho old ne gro with tho snake-akin clapped bis hands, and tho whole party rose and commenced a most furious stumping in a circle around tho pot. This being over, tliey all squatted down again, and the “old man” resumed his chant, at tho same time holding in his hand a covered basket, Irom which ho drew and dropped into the pot—first m dead snake, next a frog, then a young alligator or lizard, and last of all the herbs anil roots from his own and tin* hands of ether negroes. Silence was observed by all for some minutes after the last depos® had been made, after whjch the i?ot war taken Irom the fire, and while the nausea ting mixture was yet rdeking hot, they each dipped the end of tho middle finger of the loft hand into it, and applied the end of the finger to their tongues ; another dip into tho pot was taken with the mid dle finger of the right hand, and certain cabalistic figures described on the breksts, forehead and shoulders—one assisting tho other in the operation. Not a word was spoken until their clothes had been re sumed, and they had g »t clear of the house. Although on high occasions the Fetish, or “Obi nmn” may demand a human sac rifice in his inhuman rights, and which sacrifice is generally a young child, noth ing of tho kind was attempted in the Voo doo pow-wosv of la-L nighr. The presence ot the police would, of course, have pre vented anything of this nature, had it ev er been necessary by tho old negro con ducting the affair. Old negro women were sometimes “used up” as “material in these meetings, at Vondooton, near New Orleans, ono of whom esoap**d tin* sacrifi cial knife on one occasion, and earned the urrest of the whole gang. Tub Reaction.—The New York Times says : Thoro can bo no doubt thltt tho country is tired and disgusted with tho extreme and extravugant stylo in which the claims of tho negro liavo been pressed. By a very activo and peremptory school of po litical and social reformers, the claims, interests, courage and vharactor of the whites have been made wholly subordi nate to those of tho black-. Thoro must, in the nature of things, bo a reaction to all this—and tho Connecticut election in dicates that it has begun. Tho Columbus (Mis-*.) Index says from the returns that have been received we suppose there can bo no doubt that Mr. Harrison bus been elected to Congress from this district by a handsome majority. The National I ntolligoncor thinks it is very clear LhHt no party which might or ganize on the proposition to lorco negro sulTrugo by Federal usurpation on the Southern States, could succeed before tho people. It adds, “we do not believe that there nro three Northern States which would sustain such an issue, if to-morrow fairly and squarely presented.” A resolution of cordial welcome to the delegates attending tlm ICpi-copal Con vention, at Philadelphia, liom die Slutes of North Carolina, Texas and Tennesson, was passed by that body <»n Friday, the »th instant, but one member of the Con vention opposing it.
