HOW ON 12 CLASS OF Til K LONDON POOH LIVK # It will bo soon by the following extract from the London I).iiiy Nows that D.ck- ens sketched from lif? in tho opening chapters of “Our Mutual Friend.” Tho News says: “Mon live by fishing f»r corpse*. The ghastly trade is at least as protliable an regular laboa, and a* it unites Miincwlml of tho excitement of gambling with m t a little of tho savor of larceny, it is perhaps not wonderful that to a certain class ot minda its attractions .-liould be irresintihle. First, there is the chance ot a reward— sometimes as much as one hundred pounds having been offered for the body by the frionds or legal representatives of tho de ceased ; secondly, there ia the chum c of valuables and money being in the dead person’s pockets; and in tho event of both these contingencies failing, there is still tho six shillings puid to the coroner’ and this, as was pertinently remarked to us, ‘is a good day’s work fur the like of thorn.’ When watch or purse, is found on a body, for which a reward has not been oflerod. they are, as a rule, quietly pocketed, and their late owner put, hack into Iho river, that ho maybe picked up either by the police or some*brother professional. That tho men lollowing this loathsome) calling ure callous hardened, and brutal, is a mat ter of course; that they should long for a crop of well-dressed, ’ richly-appointed suicides as eagerly as tho sporlsunu nope» for a good bag is not wonderful ; and that they aro a* unscrupulous in their dealings with the dead as they are preserving in their efforts to capture them may bo taken as inevitable. The strange and repug nant calling once known and realized, the character of its professors may bo easily conceived. “Of course, the Thames police take prompt charge of all the bodies they see, but tho range ol their duties is wide, the number of boats and men told off to a pro scribed number of miles of river compar atively small, and the re sult is not a un- profl able opening for the lighterman, who, half-thief, half-body-.'iiutehcr, turns his attention and devotes his nights to looking up and down the river for corpses. A short time back one of the best known of tliesu fellows was seen about two a. m. pulling stealthily in shore, with what seemed in tho dense mist und darkness to bo npassonger or follow-laborer silling in tho stern. .Something in tho uncouth swinging to and fro of the latter excited the suspicion of tho police bon* on duty, and, fearing that a helpless drunkard had fallen into evil bunds and' would be robbed and maltreated, the lighterman was hailed and ordered to pull to. Il was then scon that the man supposed to bo drunk was doad. The gear ordinarily used for towing tho subjects from where they aro found to Iho nearest wharf in tho samo parish was out of order, and tho lighterman had in consequence calmly reared tho corpse u:» with its back l<* tho rudder, and in such an altitude that tho faces of tho living and tho dead men all but touched each time tho form-r bent forward to his oar. “Only a still’ ’un, master, I’m a taking up to Uolherhitbo,” was sulkily given in reply to tho ques tions put; after which the speaker was permitted to pan on, to deposit his prey und claim his reward in due cmirse.” that Mr. Oakhcurl’s establishment re quired that assistance. The old gentlemun desired to make his son feel that he .-up- ported himself. At twonty-dvo years of ago young Oakheart married, receiving with his wife a moderate sum of money’, lie want* to purchase a share in his fath er’s business; they cannot come to terms. Young John £an make u bettor bargain with a rival house in the irade. Tho old man hesitates; ho likes the sound M Oak- heart & Soil, but business is hu-ice-s. Had his son marriod a penniless girl the father would have given him what he m w refuses to sell; hut now business i.-busi ness, ami, ns a calculation, lie can’t do il, So young John becomes chief partner in a rival firm t » that which ot:a day must bo his, und trains against tho old man, whose only sin is to lay up wealth* for iiis son. Every day at 4 o’clock, loaning against a particular corner on 'Change, stand* the older merchant, his hands deeply sunk into his dog-eared pocket-. A young city man approaches; they exchange a quiet, earolegs nod. “Feel inclined to discount for TJOO at longdate?” “\VhHt security asks old John. “Turkish ’64.” “Any names?” “My own only; it i< a private matter, and has nothing to do with our house,’’ replied the younger. “I will give I per cent.” “1 should want moro than that, as money goes—say 44.” “The brokers only ask 41,” replies the young tnun. “Then give it.” And they soparato with an indifferent nod. That wua father and son. Every Sunday young John Discovery of the Mississippi, Most strange of all the ex| e lit ions was that of tho discoverer of the U u-i.-.-ippi. Hordinuml DeSolo left Hispaniola, ac companied by a numerous band of horse men, besides infantry. How horses were stored in small vessels at that period it i.- diflicult to understand. It is, however, on record that botwten 2U0 ami GOO cavalry disembarked in tho iiay of Spirito Santo. Portuguese volunteer.-, in burnished armor, and Castilians “very gailaiil with silk upon silk,’’ joined tho adventurer as soon a-* the news of his voyage was told. Chains to bind their captives; bloodhound* to hunt down the natives; stores of lood, and pigs which they might turn loom lt« breed in the woods, woroainongtho munitions with which tho expedition w«s furnished. The ships which brought tho adventurers to the Florida shore were sent hack. “Death oreuccc.-r!" says tho“Portugueso eye-witness” Then follows a narrative oi diaisler, leading up to a climax of suf fering and death. What a romance un** derlies the formal phrase! of that eye-wit ness! We get a glimp.-o of terribly mil jifo. We see tho ad venturers’ dismay at tlie swamps and forest solitudes. Mosor- tion of Porcallo, who had lavished liis for tune in magnificent equipments. Ono guido after another who tails to load them to tho golden city, torn to piece* by Mood- hounds, burnt alive, cruo ly -.aiu in name- joss ways. Now the passion for play take* possession of their soul? ; the hot-blooded Castilian desperadoes quarrel eagerly over their dice. Now und then a blow—n gleam of Toledo lapieie in the moonlight, a few passes, carte, tierce, a stumble or soiiju- what too wide u parry ol an eager thrust, a wicked blade leaping in like a tongue ol llame light over the tardy guard, and then a shallow grave among the tree roots. Yet the solemn ceremonies of the Church were observed in the forest; the ornaments which tho usages of the Church enjoined were on every saint's day in procession. Gold was to bo found ut all h ./.trds, und by moans fair or foul; but Christianity - „ „ 1 his wife dine at Itus*ell Square, in tho same house | where old Oak heart bus lived for thirty ] years. His name has been cleaned out of ; the brass plate on the door. This house young John still looks upon, and tpeaks • >f, ns his homo. All tho associations of childhood aro there—every piece of fur niture is ail old friend—every object is sa* erod to his eyes—from his own picture, taken at four years old, with its chubby faco and fat legs, to tho smoke-dried pic ture of Gen. Abercouibie. They form the architecture of that temple of his heart—his homo. After dinner tho ladios have r< tired. Tho crimson curtains are comfortably closed. Tho crackling fire glows with satisfaction, and old John pushes the !> >t- tlo across to his son, for if old John hu I a weakness it is for tuwnoy port. “Jack, my hoy,’’ says he, “what do you want with 4:1200?” “Well, sir,” replied John, “there is a piece of ground next to my villa at lirix- ton, and they throalen to build upon il— if so, they will spoil our \lew. Next Wednesday being Emily’s birth day, the old couple dine with tiie young folks. Ju.-t before dinner old .John lake* his daughter-in-law aside, and pbuss in her hand a parchment—it is tho deed of the little plot of ground she coveted.
