Yesterday, in olieuienee to orders from Mayor Wilkins, a portion of the police force of the city. accompanied by u cou ple i>f soldiers sent by the military au thority, proceeded to these shanties for the purpose of breaking them up. '1 hey found the shanties full of negroes—from live to eight or ten occupying each little division. Among them wore twenty-live or thirty so sick that they could not be removed. In one of the shanties they found a negro woman dead, who was said by the other inmates to have been poi soned by another woman. In another was a dead negro man, and in this same shanty were several who looked as if they would soon die. A moie pitiable and revolting spectacle could hardly bo imagined. There were also four or live families of white people found in theso shanties— I every one of whom wore sick and not in i a condition to he removed. In one roou j | “so called,” which had no shelter ovor- j head, was a woman witli two sick chiUl- ! ren, and all tlm inmates were in a most wretched and deplorable condition. The polico tore down a number of the structures, and dispersed the inmates. They have been reported to tbo City Physician, and steps taken to minister to their present needs. The Eclipse, yesterday morning, though a “grand, gloomy and peculiar” specta cle, hardly came up to the promise ot the hills. Tho moon was too far from tho earth, and consequently presented too small a disc to obscure the sun to the extent that the ulmanac makers had led us to look for. Still it was sufficient to make us realize how important, the sun is to our comfort, and how cheerless and gloomy the earth would bo if deprived for any length of time of even a portion of his light and warmth. Tho only star that we could makes out was Venus, west of tho sun, which was quite plainly visi ble. The temperature, as indicated l-y tho thermometer, fell only a degree or two during the eclipse, hut to the human feeling the dark inteival was one of un comfortable ehillnes-s.
