All tho other monomaniacs had oil on tho brain, or poetry, or capital punishment, or negro sutlerago, and were quite as de voted and zeaious as he u^on their claims. So tho old soldier, with a long sigh and a brave heart, took up hi? singlo shovel and commenced to build tho whole fort by himself. 11*» wheeled barrow after barrow of earth into the set. tugg< d from morning till night, until at last lie raised a narrow causeway from the main land to a rock at tho end of a i< ng sand bar. AKai.lant Knight Comes to Gkikf. The following incident is given in a Now York paper as having recently occurred the Central Park : Not long ago a pretty, a&URbtor of a wealthy i , JkhiiR in thu Park with a gentl-man j-ia * une imp ? of obtaining her hand.— . e rushed his suit while they were pass- 11 K up one of the drives, and the lady nn- s wcrLd him jestingly : "If you will ridn ‘•flight acr.i?? the Park gras?, going out (■n the other s ! do, I will say *,ves 1’ ” I ho g.-ntlepian closed with the offer at ‘ ,l \ ainl spurred his nag over the soft 'Gi of which the Park Commissioners Hero bo slept and dwelt i:i tile company only of his assuring conscience ; and when at last his path was done, lie sot to work at his fort. Tho result of all thoso years i.? before ». His battery is sodded green, with parapot, beam, uiteh, magazine, revert- menu, ubattis, and it mounts nio .k or (.Quaker guns, upon carriages of capital instruction, lo iking up from the sound towards Hell Gate, like real at biters of dominion. The old lunatic is worn and failing, but he is not sati-li**d. Hi? fort is done, but not bis whole duty. So he has projected a water battery and s- a-wall around tho entire island, and means to bring to bear upon it all the knowledge of Vaudan and Todleben. When the island is impregna ble he will wrap his mantle about him and die at his battery. For tho truth of all this ptory let any body passing up the Hast river bmk upon the island tip, and *• e the < Id man ditch ing and building, ard tin.* little fort close by him bristling with pop-guns, Admission of Southkiin M kmiikus.— We find the fallowing in the Washington correspondence of ill * Chicago Times, of 1th in-1. As a general tiling, this corres pondent is unusually accurate in his state ments, arid hence wo reproduce a portion of his remarks upon it very interesting subject—one that concerns tho Southern people vitally. Speaking of tho udmi?sb>n of Southern member* "f Congress to their seats, bo says : "It is true that questions r< lating to the admission of Southern iicmbers of Con gress are disen-.-ed with at sorbing interest by tho Southern people in Wa-I.tnglon. 1 am aware that the impre?»i<>n prevails elsewhere—perhaps in the West—that the elected Southern member? iiiu.-l comply with certain terms or conditions, more or loss degrading, before they can be admit? ted. This, 1 believe, i? a mistake, li is impossible, pm Imps even probable, that the oath of 1HG2 will ho required. But that will bo all. indeed, from what J can learn, there will bn mueli ly-s opposition to the admission of the Southern members than bhr generally been supposed. It has been feared, and with amsiu reason, that the Radical faction, led by Sumner and Stevens, would bn powerful enough to exclude all the Southern members, or as many as they chogn. But 1 am confidant that such is not the ease. Tho entire in fluence of the Fresideiit will he exerted in favor of the free ndmissiou, nt the open ing, of all tho member* who have been legally elected : and your readers may be assured that tin? inl!m»nc>* will be found to bo much more potent than that of the Radicals. When the dee -ivi* day comes, many upon whose vol *.? the'Radicals now count will be found ranged on the side of the President.” We are inclined to believe that tho view* outlined above are well founded. When tho decisive duv arriws, tin* Radi cals will hesitate, and finally recoil from tho adoption of revolutionary measures. Tho Hartford Pres? toll? a story of a re cent accident on ilia New London Rail road. An intoxieaUd Irishman wa«sitting on the track, when the engine struck him and tossed him down nn embankment. Tho conductor ba« ked LB'ruin to pick up the dead body. The victim wn? found alive, howover, only ‘•omewhat bruised, and taken to Norwich. Here the conduc tor kindly offered to send tin* man to his homo, a few miles away in a hack, but lie insisted on his ability to work, and refused to be sont home. The conductor pre.??od tho matter, when the Mile-ian, who had stood thn hutting of the cow-uatcimr so well, bristled up with : "Go away wid .ver kerridgo. I'll go hum • by my** f; an’ it I've done any damage to yer old ingine, bodad I'll puy it on the spot.” Impeachment.—'Tim ijondon corres pondent of tiio Bu.-tun CommonW' ulth, the organ of Senator Sumner, calls for the impeachment of the President.
