For l)ougress,~2(1 District. Lumpkin, Ga., Oot. 28, 1865. To the Voter* of the 2d Conyrrational District: In view of the present condition of our coun try, the result of the late revolution roudoriug our prominent friends ineligible to a seat in Congrotw for tho presonf, 1 have bocn induced by friouds from difforont parts of the District to become a pandidate. If 1 am your choice I will support the resto ration policy of President Johnson; looking to a complcto return of the Southern States to their former status in the Union. The only hope fur poaoo, happiness and prosperity is in a frooand cheerful support of tho union of the States upon constitutional limitr’.ons. There is sorrow at tho grave of a firstborn; anguish in the house that weeps a parent dead. I remember the touching lamentation of that ardent and impassioned nature, Edmund Burke, when ho mourned an only son, the heir of hie house and his name. You have all heard the wail of tho King of Israel at the doath of a rebel son, but no suoh sorrow is ever felt for tho soldier slain in battle or for kindred gono down to the grave, as the oxilo feels looking for the timo upon his native homo, or the patriot when he socs the soil of his country crimsoned with fratornal blood. May our eyes never weep those tears again. Your oountry hangs weep ing on your neck and beseeches you by the memories of the past aud tho hopos of tho fu ture. to stay reproach aud crimination and send healing waters along all the channels of social nudipolitical life.
