Tho fact that cholora has already made

from Hall's Journal of Health:
Tlio "Asiatic cholora,” aa first known ia
this country in 1832 and 1833, is chiefly a
diseaso prevailing in warm weather, or,
rather, in a warm atmosphere, for it can
bo ciontod at any soason, and in the cold
est latitudes, by combining tho three es-
sontial requisites, namely, moisture, Yogo*
table docay, and a rogular boat oxceeduig
eighty dogrees. Tho great and distin
guishing foaturoof cholora is a copious,
trequontnnd painless discharge from the
bowels of a substance almost as thin es
water, with a whitish lingo, as if a little
milk had been dropped in it. When this

Jell. Davis* Trial.
Telogruphio Correspondence Cincinnati Com
wcroial.
Washington, N*»v. 9.—The Republi
can of this evening notices, at great
length, a paragraph in tho correspondence
relative to tho trial of Jeff. Davis, and the
opinion of Chief Juatico Chase upon it.—
It gives somo additional facts, from which
it appears that the Chiof Justice came
boro rr
rom Ohio some time in August last,
at tho spocial invitation of the President,
to consult on tho general subject ol triab
fortreaeon. Subsequently, about the first
of October last, President Johnson ad
drogsod a lotter to Chief Justico Chase
informing hitn that it might become no-
cessCTV for tho Govornmont to prosocuto
seme high crimes and misdemeanors com
mitted against the United .States within
the District of Virginia (Chiof Justice
Chase’s circuit), and inquiring whether
tho Circuit Court of tho united States for
that district in so far organized and in con
dition to exercise its functions that the
Chief Justico, or oithor ol ihu Supreme
Court Judges, would hold a term ef the
Circuit Court there during the autumn or
oarly winter for tho trial of cases.
About the middle of October Chief J ua-
tico Chase roplied to the President’s lot-
tor. He positively stated that his Circuit
Court for tho District of Virginia, oithor
to bo presided over by himself or ono of
liis associates, would not hold a term du
ring tho autumn or oarly wittier Hi*
statod that tho rogular term authorized by
Congross would commence this year on
tho 27th of November, the present mouth,
only ono wook boforo tho annual term ol
tho Supreme Court, when all the Judges
are roquirod to bo present—leaving but
ono week for the Circuit Court to sit.
which, in the opinion of the Chief Ju.tice,
would bo too short a torni for the transac
tion of any important burinon*. But the
Chief Justico adds that, •won* the facts
otherwise, ho so much doubts tho proprie
ty of holding tho Circuit Courts of the
I United State* in Stales which have been
declared by tho Executive aud Legisla
tive departments oi tho National Govern
ment to ho in rebellion, nnd, therefore,
subjected to martial law before tho com
plete restoration of tie so broken relations
with tho nation, and the supersoduru of
tlio military by the civil administration,
ho would be unwilling to hold. uch courts
in such States within his circuit—which
includes Virginia—until Congress shall
havo had an opportunity to contidor and
act on tho whoJo subject. The Chief J us
tice exprossos to tho President the opinion
that a civil court, in a district utidor mar
tial law, can only act by tho sanction and
under tho supervision of tho military
power, and he positively asserts that ho
could not think that it becomes the Jus
tice* of tho tSupromo Court to exor^isO

raso in which il was not precodod for one,

{Second. A cure is impoeriblo undor any
conceivable circumstances without abso
lute quietude of body, on a bod, for days
togother, tho timo of confinement being
shortened in proportion to the prompti*
tudo with which tho quietudo is secured
after tho first action of the bowels has
taken place, which gives a fooling of tirod-
noss, und, on silling down, a sensation of
rest and satisfaction.
Third. When the pationt coasoa to uri
nate ho begins to die, and iL resumption
is a certain index of recovering health,
and always infaliiblo.
One of the usual atlondantfl of an at
tack of cholora is an unconquerable ten

At a health meeting hold in New York.
Dr. Bayer, ol that city, thus discoursed
on cholera and its treatment:
Df. Bayer thought that n lew common*
souse views spread broadcast among the
pooplo might probably bo of somo service
to allay the terror connected with this
plague. Great tear and anxioty had a
great deal to do In tho propagation and
spread of disease, und influence" the phys
ical condition to such a dogroe as to mako
porsons raoroeubioetto it than they would
otherwise bo. lie thought if tlio people
understood tho single fact that tho cholera
ia not necessarily a fatal disease, and that
it is always procedod by cortain premoni
tory symptoms, such as lassitude, groat
languor, debility and a diarrhea, and th(lt
in this stage of tho disease it is nearly al
ways curable if tho proper precautionary
measures aro tuken, it woulu tend to allay
tho popular terror. At this stage of the
disease, it is ol tho first importance to pay
attention to tho symptom, which is tho
diarrhea. At tho very first approach tho
patient should assume tho horizontal pos
ture and retain it, and under no circum
stances assume tho perpendicular, even
for a momont.
Absolute, positivo rest is needed, tho
body being kept in a warm condition.—
Any artificial means can be used for that
which may be necessary. Tho main thing
is the horizontal position, and perfect rost
at the very commencement of the dis
ease. If the pationt is down stairs whon
taken, lot him t-tay thero or bo carried up,
but do not lot hint walk up. If ho is out
visiting, lot him stay at his friend’s house.
Keeping Hus position forty-eight hours, in
the majority of instances tho diseaso will

niodo of life. Ol course, if he has bad
liHbits, lie should reform them; eat and
drinrf rationally, and allend to business as
usual, but not overdo himself. In the pe
culiar condition of tlio atmosphere when
a pestilence is abroad, tlio system is ren
dered more liable to exhaustion, and lie
■diould husband his strength by avoiding
violent exercise. With trioaofuw precau
tionary measures, and a propor sanitary
condition of tho city, and a rigid enforce
ment of quarantine, wo may hope to os-
capo any pestilential epidemic.
