Tho enuso of the tiro cannot he stated with any corlainty. Some of the negro dock hands state that it originated from tho bottom of a lighted lantern, which a negro wus carrying, dropping into the cotton. Fortunatoly ue lives were lost, and the lockod party worn taken on hoard and brought down by the Huntsman. Thoro wore four hundred and thirty- four bales of cotton on board, all of which wns completely destroyed. Tho Duko was owned by Cox, Otis & o., and proved a total loss. .No iasur- anco.—Mobile Tribune, Ilf/'. Hard after the Potatoes.—Wo were not favored, yoatorday, with a mammoth po tato from any quarter. But wo received i radish of dimensions nearly as groat a our largest specimen potato. It was sent toua by Mr. li. W. Massongale, of tho neighborhood of Box Springs, Talbot county. We cannot give its precise woight or measurement; eutllco it to say that a fence post taken from the ground could hardly have loft a lurger hole. If any ot our friends think they can make anything by calling this radish to a showing, wc trill make a fair comparison and report uc cordiugly. Tho large stock of horses and mules that will be sold on Thursday, by D. P. Filin, can bo seen at Uammol’s stable to day. Nu Registration.—It. is » inwtakon no lion—which wo understand is entertained by some persons —that a voter has to re gister Ids name before he can vote in the election of to-day. No such requirement iitts been made by either Federal or State authority. Nut u Candidate.— We refer to tho card of Judge Quin, declaring that he is not caudidato tor the Legislature, for which position some of his many friends hav been urging him to permit the use of his namo. ^ Speech of Judge Hi ghat a.—In hisspoech Monday night, at Temperance Hall, Judge Bigharn, nfior briefly explaining and discussing the two other plans for roi to rati erf—to wit: the one known as M Lincoln’s plan, exemplified in the case of Arkansas, Louisiana and Tonnossee; and the one, known as tho Republican plan explained in the speech of Thaddeus Ste vens-presented and explained at large tho plan of President .lolmson for our ros loration to the full exorcise of civil rights and piiviloges, ami argued that the only true path of duty for us lay in amnesty of feeling amongst ourselres and a firm sup port of the National Administration. In the course of his remarks ho refer red to tho Confederate flag, when some one i-aid it had played out. It has played out, *aid lie, a-* tho oinblom of fraternal strife, hut not ns a symbol of American g’mry, Tho day will cunro when ovory true ndntiror of courage and of chivalry will read with joyful pleasure the poem tint will ho written in praise of tho brav and gallant men who boro “tho bonnio blue Hag" through victory and through dofeat, and when its praise will ho consul orct by every American as the praiso of tho prowess of his country men. Wo noed tc cultivate feelings of fraternity. Th xill not bo nuilured hy taunts, hut must afiso from feelings of mutual respect, such ti- was displayed hy Loo and Grant on the day of the great surrender. All that he Mid was received with profound atton Hop, nu?l those remarks with prolonged Applause. Tho mooting passod oil’ very agreeably except that some dissatisfac tion was px pressed at the remarks relative to tho Con Rrogsional test oath. In that connection bn hold up the example of tho city of linden in electing Baron Rothschild and AVihrman Salomon, repeatedly, to the British Parliament, until, at length, they *wo permitted to take tho scats to which they wore entitled, without submitting to tho test oath at first required of them. It thought by some that ho intended se personal consure, whilst bo was c d^ntly confining himself, as ho was duly bound to do, t<» the subject under Consideration. He, however, spoke firmly of tho Congressional test oath, which ho pronouncod unconstitutional; and argued that a in«n supporting the plan of the Ad ministration for our rostorulion could not, •n his opinion, take it. Tho people of Jersey City are again ex ercised over another mystery, which threatens to create an excitement equaling that occasioned by the story of the Imunl- church. From a certain house in tho Third Ward there emanates almost night ly horrid screeches, yells nml groans, mingled with the cry of murder, which ularma the neighborhood. A few nights since a policeman on tbut heat heard ihc noises which wore so terrifying and indi cative of the infliction of violence, that o went to tho police station to stale th case, and inquire if he would he justilied forcing open tho door and entering t he house. As no assistance Imd been asked or, it was decided that the house could not ho entorod. What makes the a I lair more strango i tho fact that tho houso is only occupied by two persons—a man and woman—and is always kept ontiroly clonod, not even window shutter over being open tomt it a ray of light. They Lave no inter course with any one, and appear to h no desire to form acquaintances. Tho man goos out daily as if going to his business, pnd presents no unusual ap pearance. When ho loaves tho door is im mediately closed and bolted, and is not poned again until ho returns, when, after his entrance, it is immediately refnstoned, nd soon nfior llio noises commence, Once or twico a person having on nigh' >tbes only, has been scon to leave tin houso during the night, and after going as far as tho corner return and enter tin houso.
