Uiw, \Veathcr % Boats. —The steamer Mnerlyn came up Saturday evening, the slight rise causod by the rains of weok. The river commenced re- ling again, and had fallen a foot or two, a rain which continued almost with- iutennission Sunday night caused other “upward movement,’' as the cot- men say, and there was a steady rise iterday We'learn that tho Munnerlyn brought /fa light freight. Hurglars Still Operating.—On Sunday ght a thief or thieves entered tho “Pleas- tHour” bar-room, on Randolph street, boring through the door and removing e hasp. They secured four or live hun- red dollars’ worth of cigars and other roods, and are no doubt' making light of eir adventure by this time, and making ieproprietor of tho saloon smoke for it. iilo be hoped that this act of rascality ill cause thorn to exporienco some hours lot 10 very “pleasant.”' On the same night, the smoke-house of lr. Jerry Terry was entered and a por» ion of his meat dexterously appropri- ited. This is not tho first time Mr. Terry tu had tho misfortune to “fall among hieves” within the last two or three moDtha. Not only he, but the commu- nity genoraily, will find a “good Samari tan in tho rope that stretches tho necks • the burglars about town, if haply any them can receive thoir deserts. Columbus Iron Works Company* Wifor EnquirA visit to the exton- ve tdablishment of this company, on Siturday, afforded your correspondent tfco Ratification of seeing for himself what industry and perseverance can accomplish in »o ihort a space of time—how Phmnix- i'he this place of art has risen from its aiheg and resumed its former proportions in buildings and machinery. And still the pleasure is greater to know that tho energetic men who eompi i&o this company, *>lh a resolution unconquorablo, and un daunted by the destruction of their works hjreason of so-called military nocessity, *ted to us a job done under his direction, upon a large wrought iron shaft belonging to the steamer Shamrock. Only a few years since, to have such a job done, it would have had to be sent to New York or Pittsburg. But presto! here it was done at our own doors, and in a manner aliko creditable and durable. Steamboat ownors havo causo to appreciate the ex- fatenco of- such men in our community.— Railroads &nd mill ownors can go at full speed withobtthe constant dread of hope- loss breaks, when Golden can be found. In the pattern shop Mr. Daniel Collins is to be found constantly at his post, and capablo to bring out of wood a pattern of the most exquisite and difficult draught, from tho common cooking utensil to the ponderous steam cylinder. Attentive to his business, and attached to his trade, he is a quite necessary and competent ad junct to the establishment. Knowing him from childhood, wo can safely recom mend him as a model of industry and perseverance. Truly it is a pleasure to view tho beautiful workmanship of his hands. In the office is Mr, Robert ft. Stockton, tho financier of the concern, the courteous business man, and tho pleasant gentleman. His manner of dispatching business is agreeable and noiseless, and does credit to his intelligence and urbanity. The nu merous patrons of this company will boar testimony to his excellent business ability and strict integrity in all tho transactions they havo with him. The employees are men who fully un derstand thoir business, and are faithful in doing justice to the work of the pat rons of tho establishment, and vie with each other in thoir endeavors to promote the best interests of the company; and in doing this they gain honor lor themselves and win the best feelings of thoir em ployers. “To sum up,” as tlio legal gentlemen remark, this company is a model one; it has felt tho rough band of war, but the past roputation of its work will not be permitted to go down; but if energy and industry can keep ago tho whir of its fans, tho ringing of its anvils, tho click of its hammora, and the revolution of its engine, we nro cortain that it will bo done, and long continue a public desideratum, a hive of industry, and the means by which its forty-five operatives may gain an hon est livelihood for their families—by tho labor of their hands and sweat of the brow. Success to tho Colmubus Iron Works Company! ft. “.I Soft Blare for the IV'carifd. — Wo saw a poor wounded boy, just from pris on, asking his way to the wharf. He wm thin, emaciated, an outline sketch of man. Wo told him no boat was up. “What shall I do?” sa3’stbo invalid. “Do ! do! whore did you stay hut night?” wo in quired. Tho weak voice replied, “At a soft place for tho woariod.” “Do you know the spot ?” asked several philanthropists. “Well, 1 think 1 can show you the house if you will assist me to do so," plied tho poor unfortunate. He was assistod; and reader do you know whore the place was, and where ho was kindly cared for ?
