Terruh-e Tragedy at Brooksyill*, Mibs.—From ft gollem»n wlio oaran down od tho train yegterdfty from Mm- masippi. wo learn that n teniMo **■■#***? occurred near Hrooksvillo. in that State, ou Sunday raoruingj la»U which inrolved the death of nearly a whole family. It eeema that a young man named James Thompeon had a misunderstanding with his father, T. K. Thompson, about the title to some properly hold by the latter and that ho went to the house Sunday morning about daylight, and killed his mother, his two sisters, Jennie and Mar garet, and his brothor, Clay, and attempt ed to take tho life of his remaining sister wounding her soverely. He thenwent to the river, whore his father was at the time, and attempted to kill him also, snapped both brrrcls of a shot-gun at him. and then wounding him with a pistol. The murderer was arrested and taken to Biooksvillo on Monday, when he was taken up and hnngod by the citizens. This story is confirmed by a letter from a friend in thut section, who says the murder was tho most fiendish and diabolical act over perpetrated, and that the murderer richly deserved the punish ment he received.—Register and Aiher- liter. . The True Philosophy.—One sultry hot summer day an honest old man was plowing his field, when suddenly he be held a godlike figure sowly approaching limi. The man started hack. '1 am Sol omon,’ said tho phantom, in a confiding voico. ‘What art thou doing hero, old ■nun 1—If thou art Solomon,' was tho re ply, ‘how cans't thou ask me ? When I was n youth thou didst send me to the ant; I saw its method of living, and it taught me to ho diligent, industrious, and gather tho superfluous for a stormy day. What I then leurnod, I still oontinue to do.’ ‘Thou hast studied thy lesson but half,’ replied the spirit, ‘go once more to the ant and learn from it also huw to find rest mid quiet ill the winter of thy years, and how to enjoy that which thou linst hoarded up. A Tradition.—It 1ms been a ques tion for discussion among philosophers, how it happens, that women, naturally amiable, when nroused, can say such sharp and penetrating things. Tliomys- tery was solved not long since, by the discovery of some very old archives, that gives the following explanation of the matter. It is said thut when Lot sepa rated from Abraham, thut ho determined to invest Ins surplus funds in real estate; and the city of Sodom presenting an in viting field, he turned his fuco thither, mid tlirre located.— Hut so great wuaJh 0 wickedness of the people, flint it was de termined by tho Creator id'the universe to destroy the place ; accordingly, mes sengers were sent to lend Lot and his family out; they departed reluotantly ; and Mrs. Lot giving her bonnol box to a servant to bring along, was watching and stopping for her nnd scolding with ul, when she was suddenly turned into a pillar of salt. Thus by a strange and wonderful sympathy, a woman's tongue oven to this day.is quito salty, whonovor she feels disposed to convert it into a saline weapon, especially, if her bonnot is missing or a subject of critique,— Southern Recorder. Cheeky.—A Now York correspond ent tells an aneodoto of a robbery that lately took place at one ot tho largest banking houses in that city, The bank er stcod inside his counter, near tho safe, A man oaiuu in without a hut, and with u pen behind his enr. lie walked^ round to tho spot where (Im hunker stood, who was talking with a gentleman, mid said to him. “l’louso to move sir," und the banker did. Tho fellow cooly took out of tho safe several thousand U - S. bonds, and oooly walked uway, and has never linen seen from tlmt time to this. Near tho closing hours of business the bonds wore sought for and oould not be found. Tho banker turned to ouo of the clerks and asked him for them, stating that lie saw him remove them from tho drawer. Fortunately the clerk was able to prove an alibi, und then the nudaoity of tho thief was niude apparent. The waterfalls which form so impor tant a part of tho toilotof a modern Indy of fashion, mo procured, it would seem, lit the expense of a grout deal of amioy- unoo to the softer sex pf Germany, Ac cording to tho Kuropo nowspuper the whole country is in an iuproar on aooount. of the people who go about, scissors in hand, with tho express olijeot of cutting the hair of every woman who walks with it dressed attor the fashion of tho coun try, i, o., hanging in long plaits over tho liaok. Even the churches are not free from these pestilent thiovos, the lastonso reported being that of a lady whoso hair was cut off whilst ongnged in hor devo tions in tho Evangelical church of liuda. Another Story.—A St. Louis ex- change says: "Mr. Juntos Luinley, an old ltocky Mountain trapper, states thut when about 75 miles above the fulls of the Upper Missouri, last Soptcinbor, he discovered an immense meteorio stone ourved with curious liieroglyhpios with fragments of glass, mid heio and there dark stains, as if caused by a liquid* He is confident thut the hieroglyphics arc the work of human hands, and tlmt the stone itself, although but the fragment of nil immense Laly, must have been' used for seine purpose by undiluted be ings of another world.” A passenger swearing terribly in the cars on the ltoston and 1'rovideuce Kail- rood, was approached by a young minis ter with more zoni than discretion, who said to him abruptly; "My dear sir, Jo you kuow wlioie y„u are going ! —straight to hell." "Just my d—d luck!" replied the mau, looking tho minister in tho tnoe with an alarming uir, and suddenly fum bling for his cheek, "1 bought a ticket for Providence.” In Sacramento, recently, a woman procured the release ofher husband from jail, and that night ruu oil’ with uuother fellow. Her object in procuring her hus band's release was to leave somebody with the children. Bassouiterrc, tho French Embassador to Spain, was telling Honri Quatro how lie entered Madrid. "1 was mounted ou the smallest mole in the world,” "All," said Henri, “what an amusing sight — the biggest ass on the smallest mule I" a "I was your Majesty's representative," wtw the rejoinder. Au Irish witness ill a court of juatioe being asked what kiud of “ear-marks” the hog in question had. replied, "He had no particular ear mark. hooches, Early, 1 MUIsr.
