The hurricane, or whatever it may be

of a semi cire'e, and spared nothing in iis
course. Houses were blown down, trees
uprooted, atid fences scattered to the
winds. As far us ho was able to learn,
there were twelve houses in the place
more or Jess injured, and much damage
lone to bouses In tl.e vicinity. The old
John A. Jackson factory was unroofed,
and the building materially injured. The
house of Mrs k Htacey, on the hill, suffered
considerably, aud in this building two
ladies were mortally wounded, and aro
probably doad by ibis time—one of them,
our, informant thinks, is Mrs. Johnson,
mother-in-law of Mrs. Stacey. Four no-
groes are known to huvo been killed,
while a great many were uiore or less
hurt. A little negro girl, it is said, was
blown upwards of half a mile. One gen

by the blowing down of trees alonn at
$0000. The storm left its mark all through
that section of county, and was felt as far
down as Tuscumhin. Ala

such tragedies as that lately enacted in
Brooklyn, in tho case of Mary Harris,
who killed Burroughs, in Washington,
tbo jury decided that a woman is justifia
ble in killing a man f.»r breaking a prom
ise of marriage. Tho verdict was of
course specific, but precedents have great
weight in law matters, and the decision in
that case necessarily has a wide bearing.
If the case had been reversed, and a wo
man, instead of a man, had been the vic
tim of tho homicide, the jury would have
been obliged to reach the same conclu
sion, or else show' themselves guilty of
partiality—of which juries are of courso

seoiuc very much like that in Washing
ton, so far as the incentive to Lite act of

strongly attached to tho object of his af

He may have felt that ho was greatly
wronged ; there may be much to mitigate
his crime; but-it is a crime nevertheless.
There is danger that love-shooting will
become fashionable if it continues to re

about time to put an end to it.
