Dldu’t that Matt Sniffer f
An occasional correspondent, writing
from Knoxville, Tenn., to the Republi
can Banner, gets off tho fullowing on
“Old Ninutl” :
There ere s few Kast Tennesseean* who
do not know John Fleming, of thi* coun
ty, n lawyer of much sharpness, with a
good practice, and, as far aa I can lean,
of undoubted loyalty. Well, John tells
e most amusing anacdute of our Reverend
Uovernor, which la too good to be lest,
and, what ia more to the point, be givec it
as coming from Andy Knott, who is,also,
a well-known citixcn, and one who beera
a good record for'loyalty. The pith of
tho matter is c-inleinod in a description of
lirownlow’a terrible sufferinge and mar
tyrdom, ef which the world hue heard so
much for the last two years.
A few months ago, Brownlow sued
Snood, Uroxior and Reynolds for dtmage*,
end recovered $'25,0UJ in the Circuit Oourt
at Knoxville, causing the property of
those gentlemen to bo told eut, end buys
iag it at hie own price; property tbit
would, in nil probability, in peaceable
times, have brought twico tbe amount of
the judgment.
After all this bad occurred, Squire
Knott meets Fleming, who was on* of the
Governor’s lawyers, (by the wev, they are
ell Col. Heiskell’s constituents,) oo Gay
street, and accosts him thus:
“Well, Fleming, I suppose you sue-
ceeded in recovering $26,000 damages for
Governor Brownlow, for and on account
of hi* suffering* as a Union man V
Fleming said, “Ves, Andy, and wahad
no trouble, and could have recovered
$50,000 ju t ns easy, if we had laid it.”
Knott—Woll, John, there’s no lulling
how much that man has sufferod. When
he was put in jail at Knoxville, 1 wax in
there for my Unionism, also, with about
one hundred others. Wfeost bull beef and
•our bread, and slept on the muddy floor,
without caver, while Brownlow bed a
feather bod to eioopon, and had chiokens,
coffee, ham, biscuit, and anything that hit
family and friend* doalrcd to send him.—
Great God I Fleming, didn’t he euflferl
Directly wo wore all tent to Mobile and
Tu*caloo*a, and treatod worae than d—d
dogs, while Brownlow was furnished with
a guard to .protect, him from rebell, and
sent safely through the lines to Abraham’a
bosom. Great God I Fleming, didn't that
man suffer I Well, we ley in prison, end
came darned nigh eterving end being eet
up with vormin. Itch, etc.,wbile Brownlow
celleoted half a dozen East Tennesseeans
in Yankee land, organixed a traveling
menagerie, and showed at flfty cents a
night, children and niggora half-price,
and made lots of money, and kept it all
himself, and .-ever fed hia animali at all.
Fleming, Good God, did you ever hear
of aucb suffering? Then he wrote a book
—an Abolition book—and sold an interest
in '.be copy-right for $10,COO in cash, and
tbe damned rebels then sent his family
through tho lines to him, where they
were all feted, toasted end lionised.
Flaming, how could mortal men endure
such suffering? No sooner bed eld
Burnside taken East Tennosaoe than he
and bit family were aent back home, tbe
United Stale* Government furnishing
ambulances, team* and guards for them.
When Brownlow reached Knoxville
he took possession of tbe custom-house as
special treasury agent, at a larga salary,
and appointed a set of “revenue aids,’’
and he soon collected about $80,000 worth
of abandoned rebel properly, which haa
never been accounted for to this day I
Great God I Fleming, didn't that man
suffer ?
