tended for various branches of the organ*
ization, and tho whole machinery of the
conspiracy U being kept in rapid motion
by the countless numbers of cool, deter*
mined men. Hundreds of Fenians are
pouring into this city from all the large
towns of England and SootUnd. The
spirit stores, as well ns all the lodging
houses, are crowded, and the impression
U that they are arriving in obedience to
the mandate issued a month ago to the
Brotherhood of England and Scotland.
Drilling is going on extensively on hill
side and moor. Here and there through
out the country glimpses are caught by
night trayelors of hundreds of men
marching in military array or practising
drill exerciso9. The disciples of Fenian*
ism gmong us aro making every prepara
tion in their power for an immediate ap
peal to tho arbitration of the sword. The
Government Is fully alive to the dangers
of the situation. Dutootives are on the
alert day and night. Wily members are
the trail, lavishing gold for informa-
n. This activity the past week has been
rewarded with three important discover
ies. Jails are filling fast. In September
last two hundred arrests were made, and
at l**ast as many mofe since. In every
corner of Ireland seizing and imprisoning
! * still going on.
Delayed Dispatches.
Nkw Votul, Feb.. 3.—The Tribune’s
Washington special says that letters have
just been recoivod from Paris, confirming
every important particular the informa
tion concerning tho intentions of the Em
peror of Franco to withdraw his forces
from Mexico with the least possible do*
lay, demanding nothing of tho United
States Government except to remain neu
tral between the belligerent parlies, ac*.
cording to the assurances frequently given
and roiteratod by this government during
the last three years. Tho Emperor of
France does not ask for tho recognition
of Alaximiliau, nor insist upon any other
treaty stipulations. Tho statement pul
forth by the Paris Press that an axtraer-
dinary commission has boon sent to Mex
ico to make preparations for the evacua
tion. is confirmed by tho letters received
in Washington, and there is good reason
fijr believing that the State Department is
already in possession (if olticial informa*
tion to this vfieot, and it is to bo honed
that such Information will soon be fa d
before the public. Tho statement here
given comes from a most trustworthy
source, and may bo looked upon as abso
lutely trustworthy.
Tho statement recently published that a
commission would soon ho organized for
the trial of Semmes by the Navy Depart
ment, is incorrect, lie will bo tried for
piracy, but several other charges nnd spe
cifications aro under advisement by the
proper authorities, and the result of the
deliberations will not he made known for
several days. There are certain specifica
tions in tho charges against Somines which
require the most careful consideration, as
bis conviction on them would establish a
precedent which might operate to the de
triment of tho country in future wars with
foreign nations.
Mexico.—Tho Confederates in the
country aro being disgusted with the
French, and mar.y of thorn are returning to
tho Southern Stales.
The Noticioso, a papor of VeraCruz,
bought to be soniowhat Liberal in i e
views, had boon ordered to discontinue
the publication of its correspondence from
the Unilea Slates, and also from Europe,
on the subject of the relations existing be
tween Franco and tho aforesaid country.
It was rumored that Sebor ilidelgo had
arrived from France to lull Maximilian
that Napoleon cannot longer help him,
and that he had better prepare to rasigh
the imperial position. Maximilian ex
pressed his willingness for the French
troops to bo withdrawn if tho United
States (?) would sand him troops to
roplaco them. He also exprosaed his will
ingness to abdicaie in favor of Iturbide.
It was rumored ho would soon receive an
other million dollars from France, and
that he will make changes in his cabinet
on. 1
Tho difficulty between the Pope and
tbo Mexican clergy, on account of the
church property, continues.
About thirty thousand stands of arms
for the Imperialists recently arrived at
Vera Cruz from New York, but being
condemned as unserviceable were sent
back. It is said that thus far no ground
has been allotted to emigrants except to a
colony of Imperial soldiers discharged
from service. A few American families
who came to the country, induced by tbw
iltiming card of Maury A Co., have ex
jmndod their last dollar, and are in a piti
ful condition. There is land held by the
Government in vast quanties, but the
Confederate and Imperial offico-holdars
mado sad work with the power placod in
their hands, and invited emigration pro
maturely.
it was reported that Maximilian had re
cently said in public that he intended to
continue the course be bad begun in Mex
ico, amfpursue bis destiny.

Loss of the U. S. Gunboat Nab-
cisbus—I’kohaule Lobs or Tiiibty
Lives.—The V. S. supply steamer .New
born, Acting Master Holley, which ar
rived hero yesterday, brings news of the
loss of the gunboat Narcissus with all on
board. Bt the entianco to Tampa Ray,
Florida. She was on her way North to
beaold, in company with the tug Althea,
(which haa arrived safely at Key West,)
and had on board about thirty men, In
cluding her officers.
The Narcissus was a screw tug-boat,
one hundred and ono tuns burthen, and
oatriod two guns. She, was purchased by
the Government in the'early part of1801
for Admiral Farragul’, squadron, and bat
beon remarkably unfortunate during her
whole career. She :ailod Irom the Brook
lyn navy yard lor the West Gulf squad
ron on the *Ad February, 1864, and on the
18th April made an important seixure of
a rebel mail and about $0000 in Confede
rate notes and bonds.
Up to the 7th December, 1861, she was
consiauuy stationed in the neighborhood
of Mobile. At U o'clock on the night of
the 7th December, she was struck by a
torpedo, while koepiug watch on lha gun
boats of the enamy, near tho obstructions
in Mobile Bay. Three men were severely
.(•Hided by this mishap, and the vessel
-unk in a very .hurl Lima. She was sub-
•aqiiahlly raised, and has been stationed
in the neighborhood of Fensa.-ola, Fla.,
liuce she was repaired.—A. r, rest, A*.
having etfsptad lit* disarmament of de-
teclMnqnti of troops at sevpra! points of
the kingdom,and arrested sevoral officers,
has now declared that it is certain of be
ing able to maintain its authority.
[Madrid Oorrstpondence (January 18) Parts
Monitour.]
Tkamilitny insurrection may now bo
considered as terminated. The rebols,
discouraged, scattered, and suffering from
hunger end fatigue, are in full rotroat and
anxious lo find a refugo beyond the Por
tuguese frontier. The divisions of Gens.
Zaoata and Echague, with the troops un
der Colonnl Anca, are pursuing them so
closely, that they cannot halt long enough
lo rest. Their horsos aro consequently
knocked up and loft behind. After stay
ing a few hours at liolvis do la Java, and
subsequently at the Village dol Arzobis-
>o, Gen. Prim, convinced of tho impossl-
>Hily of crossing tho Tagus at tho bridges,
which aro all guarded, determined lo pass
that river at tho ford of Azancort. Every
way hit position is very critical, lr bo
remains in the south, on the left hank, to
reach the defile of Man Vicente, leading
into Portugal, ho will come in conteot
with the troops cantoned at Logrosan,
Trujillo, Caceres and Valoncia do Alcan
tara. li, on tbo contrary, ho succeeds in
crossing the river, he will bo pursued not
only by tho flying columns, but also by
tho forces stationed at Placentia, (Joria,
Alcantara and Gola, as well as by the
numerous detachments nf gondarmory
(guardia civilI and armed customs offi
cers plaoed along tho frontier lino. A
very prompt solution is therefore conti
dently expected here.

fully proaorved that it ia us tamo as most
of the dmnestio fowls aud animals of your
putt of the world; the pheasunta, in par
ticular, requiring the services of a num
erous detachment of men nnd boys,
with sticks aud much noiae, to induco
(hem to fly and give tho “sportsman” a
shit. Tho hutching of these birds is in
most cases the work of tlie burn-door
hen, and tboy uro fed as regularly as
any brood of chickens in Virginia. Rut
the quantities of the game is something
surprising. .In one instauco within
your correspondent's knowledge, throe
hundred and fifty bond, hares, partridges
and pheasants, were killed in one morn
ing in n piece of woods of forty acres ;
and on Tuusday lost, the Prime of
Wales and party, shooting over tho lauds
of tho Earl of Leioestor, at Holkhum,
bagged one thousand head, mostly phous-
anta.
Tho coursing of the hare, with grey
hounds, is a favorite amusement, and
ono whioh, upon recent trial undor fav-
orablo circumstances, was very highly
appreciated by your correspondent. The
English haro ia very lurge, equal in size,
strength and fiectuess, to the rod fox of
America. Unlike the rabbit, it does not
secroto itself in copse or thicket, but
makes its “form" in the open fields. -
Mounted on quick horses, mid accompa
nied by the huntsmen with two dogs
free and others in lnush, tbo people who
desire to course move leisurely ovor the
fields. The loose dogs, if well trained,
koep a sharp look-out, and will very soon
oatch sight of a running haro. They
uevor detect them, however, in the form.
Sometimes tho people engaged seo the
hare at a hundred or more yards distance
before it moves, but generally it is not
seen until out of its form, and running at
ipocd. Tho dogs, as soon as they catch
sight of tho li are, run to it witli a pace
the like of which cannot bo exhibited by
any other animal. Unless the hare has
a very long start, the gap botween it uiul
the hound is soon reduced to very smull
proportions, and when the dog is very
nearly upon it, the Imre commences a
serios of doublings, whioh increase the
sport by prolonging tho chuse and adding
to the exoitemout. T hen fur the first
time is npparent tho use of having two
dogs, for with only oue, the hare being
able to turn more quickly, and run on
shorter curves than the dog, would rarely
be taken, but by the heading oti' process,
which is soon adopted by one of the dogs,
its days aro in time ended. Often,
when the hare gets a good start, it takes
a run of a half mile or more to onable
the dogs to gut close encugh to foroe it
to double, in which oaso tho tteotest
horso is left tar behind, but os the coun
try ia so open, you aro generally able to
seo both bare and bounds throughout
the run.—Cbrr. Richmond Times.
