THE OWNERNUIP OF THE VIR
GINIUS.
New York, Dec. 29.—John H. Patter-
n, of this city, has sent a letter to Sec
retary Fish, dated the 2Gth, declaring that
the registered owner of the steamer
Virginius. lie protests against the opiu-
of the Attorney General, by which he
is condemned unheard on ex parte testi
mony. Ho states that the Solioitor of
the Treasury gave him a bill of sale of
tho steamer, thereupon He, Patterson,
truly swore that he was the owner, and
the Government gave her American regis
try. The testimony charging perj ury on his
part is false ; he has hitherto kept silent
by the advice of counsel and because he
has not been notified or called upon by
tbe Government to testify or defend him
self in relation to the matter. Ho re
quests that a copy of the evidence upon
which the Virginius was condemned by
the Attorney General be sent him ; that
ho be notified of the time and place for
the examination of any other witnesses.
A copy of his letter has also been sent to
the Attorney General.
WASHINGTON.
HATTER*-OF INTEREST FROM
THE CAPITAL.
Washington, December 29.—It has
been ascertained from an official source
that on the arrival of the Virginius at
New York, she will be seised by the Col
lector of the port, and libelled by the
District Attorney, in accordance with in
structions already forwarded to those offi
cers. If on a judicial investigation it be
shown the vessel had a register obtained
by fraud, she will bo sold, and the pro
ceeds of the sale paid to the United
States. Spain can make no claim to the
vessel, but if she should, it is positively
oortain our Government would not enter
tain such claim. Tho report that the
Spanish Government requires of us the
restitution of tho Virginius and the pay
ment of an indemnity, is not believed in
official quarters.
