DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: FRIDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 4, 1874.
Twm P«|^n tor TkrM tollaw.
We bate entered into an arrangement
to club with the Ifrion Springe (Alabama)
II?rald on the following terms :
Week It Euuuirer and Union Springs
Herald <*>
Sunday Enquirer aud Union Springs
Herald .... » 00
The Union Springs Herald is acknowl
edged to be the leadiug week’y paper pub
lished in Alabarat; and, in addition to
furnishing the news from Bullock county
aud vicinity, coutaius choice mUcella*
neons reading ma-ter and on ably con
ducted ogiicultural depaitiueut.
The Emolish Sparrow Pest.—The Eng
lish sparrow will doubtless tiud Lis way
South in time. Those who propose to
take measures to introduce him at once,
as a cotton worm destroyer, should read
the following letter from Mr. John H.
Smith, of Brooklyn, N. Y., read before
the New York Farmers’ Club:
4 'Can yon inform me what can be done
with the ‘cusaedset’ of all 'ensued' birds—
the English sparrow! It picks off my
peas as soon aa they ootue oat of the
ground, also my lettuce, raddishes, etc.,
aud almost every green thing that grows
in the garden. It also destroys the peach
and pin in bnda, the strawberries and every
thing else that comes in its way. It is al
together the mod unmitigated pest with
which I ever had to contend. In England
there is a premium allowed for every one
hundred killed. Iu Germany every far
mer is obliged to destroy sixty of these
birds every year, and there is a peualty
rigidly enforced for failing to show the
heads of sixty of these animals to the
nearest magistrate. Some method for
their destruction will need to be soon
adopted here. Can the Farmers' Club
suggest whet it shall be, as it is my firm
belief that the person who first suggested
the idea of importing these birds should
be doomed to au everlasting itching, with
out the benefit of scratching."
** —Tho French War Offioe, according to
the Iron, has worked ont the statistics of
wff lhe question of the elfeot on losses in bit-
™ tie of improved fire arms, and the follow
ing are some of the results: At the battle
of Friedland the Frenoh lost 14 per cont.
and the Russians BO per cent, of their
troops, and st Wagratn the Frenoh lost IB
i percent, and the Austrians 14 percent.
At Moscow tbs French lost SB per cent,
aud the Russians 44 per cent. Again, at
Waterloo the French lost 3(5 per ceut. and
the allies 30 per cent, of their forces en
gaged. Forty years later, when the new
. weapons were employed, the loss of the
French at Magenta was 7 per cent., that
of the Austrians the same. At Solferino
the Frenoh and Sardinians suffered a loss
of 10 per cent, and the Austrians of only
r 8 per cent.

■ A number of gross widowers
r and baohelors of this city have
f? formed a bean association, aud
j> weekly festivals are held at the residences
of the various members. The last festi
val was held at the house of a gentleman
whose better-half is absent in California,
John Dennis officiating. At the conclu
sion of the festival the tea-kettle lay on
. the bed in the best bedroom, the pot in
p which the beans were cooked lay on its
S', side on the parlor carpet, the knives,
forks, and spoons were distributed among
the spittoons in the sitting rooms, the
t by r s crib was covered with dirty tin
•lates, and the sewing-maohine was dis-
' ;ure with chunks of dough, splashes of
an soup, aud the akina of Chili peppers,
ice the organization of the society
ire has been an effort to elect a dish-
iher, but each gentleman nominated
i declined the honor on the plea of
er and more important business. The
£ Ifeganization is known aa the free aud in-
dspendent grass widowers’ bean-eating
