THE l.AKT 1>AY» or A WOMAN WHO HAH MViD ONE HL'NDLEl) AND XUlltTJ.KN V I.AIiS. Mrn. El.'en Lyons died at the residence of tier son, Thoutaa Lyona, HI l West For- ty-eighth street, yesterday, at the age of 113 years. 8bo w-h born at Edeuderry, Kings county, Ireland, in 1701, and was married to Matthew Lyons, of county Westmeath, in 1799. In 1832 the family doie to this country, and from that time they have lived in this city, where Mr. Lyons died in 1834, aged 90 years. • Until the lAst five years Mrs. Lyons at tended morning mass regularly at St. Pe tal's Church, when her son, Mr. Thomas Lyons, was living in Greenwich, near Warren street, in one of the old-fashioned houses built when that part of New York was the Fifth Avenue or Murray Hill quarter of the city. For thirty-eight years Mr. ThomAs Ly ons, the youugest of her sons, lived in Greenwich street. In all that time the o d lady 8»ldoiu missed matins, and until 1870 was frequently on the steps of St. Pete, a before anybody else. (She was not afraid to walk iu the s reets alone, be iev- ing, lb she did, that God would always take care of her. The polioemen all knew her, and the people who lived iu that part of the eity, and who attended the same place of worship, did not let her want for esooit nor for aid in climbing the steps of the church. Last lhnraday Mrs. Lyona was aa well and strong as usual. Who ate a hearty meal in the middle of the day, and made no o .mplaint until night. At about 10 o’clock, whou the servant entered her room, she said that death was upon her, hnt as she had frequently said the same thing before, the servant laughed, and sail that she was good for thirty years yet A half hour later Mrs. Lyons' daughter went to her grandmother's room and found her very feeble and breathing with difficulty. A physician was summoned, and he said that there was no aymptorus of disease, but that the old lady was lia ble to die from exhaustion of her vital powers at any moment. On Friday Mrs. Lyons apparently re covered from this attack, and for the next three days all her faculties were stronger than they had been for some years, though she still repeated her asser tion that death was upon her. In her lost hours she talked freely with friends, and inquired with much interest about those who were absent. Five minutes before ber death she asked for her beads. She died quietly and easily, and when she had pnased away, the relic of hygouo age looked like a child in slumber. Hard ly a wrinkle marked the well-rounded cheeks, and the full lips and smooth fore head told no tale of the many long win ters that had paused over them, leaving no scar behind. The face was not that of no who hod lived beyond throe score earn and ten allotted to man, and bore evidences of the grief, or wan days t even iu the happiest mortal’s expen se ‘*go down glooming in weariness e.”—New York Sun. ; tv,|| | Ode ixtm.iM a* ('K.twnmiiN, Attorneys a! A dispatch from Washington says : Third Assistant Postmaster General Barber has left for Dew York, to devise Ihe best means for carrying out the act of Congress in relation to the prepayment of ~stago upon newspapers and periodicals ailed from the officea of publication, hioh goes into effect on the 1st of Janu- k ,. 1873. This law gives a wido discretion to the ostmasier General in all rospecta save as the mode of payment, which is required be “by a special adhesive stamp, to be vised and furnished by the Postmnstcr enerul, which shall bo affixed to such ttcr, or to the sack containing the me, or upon a memorandum of such ~Umg, or otherwise, as the Postmaster neral may from time to time provide regulation.” ; It is evident that the law did not con- _plate the stamping of each paper, as It provides they shall be “weighed in bulk,” and payment of postage made per | pound. Neither can the stamps be affixed to the bag, as in most cases other mtil matter goes therein. The most feasible Ototbod of carrying out the law appears 10 the Department to be the use of ro ll hooks und stubs, the receipt to be i off and given to the publisher, aud fstub, after the necessary memoranda pade, to be stamped with the reqm- I stamp or stamps, and retained by the pinaster.
