The New Maat-Quioh Week.
The keel, stern, and the shell of the
hull of the new steamer, now being built
at the wharf by the Central Line of boats,
were commenced and completed yester
day. 'llis entire frame Work of the hull
waa in position last evening, yet the blocks
Wert laid at 7 o'clock in the morhlng.
This is speedy work, unequalled in this
country. Capt. S. J. Whitesides thinks
the boat will be ready for service in three
weeks, and that she will be entirely fin
ished within forty days from the time
when the carpenters first begun on the
wood. Borne fifteen first-class carpenters
are employed, and in addition some ten
laborers. Capt. Cham. Hlain is snperin-
tendent. The toilers and machinery are
being manufactured by the Columbus Iron
Works.
We have already given the dimensions
of the steamer. 8he is only seven feet
shorter than the Jackson, and is wider
sft. Unloaded she is to draw only four
teen inches of water, and loaded two feet.
She will carry about fonr hundred bales
of cotton.
Like everything else Capt- 8. J. White-
sides manages, it is to to first-class iu
every respect. Completing a steamer in
forty days, iu handsome style, is rapid
work, for the Honth especially.

Nothing but unfairness and prejudice can

Three companies remain in Atlanta.
Opinion of a Colored Republican.
A colored man at the Radical Conven
tion the other night stated his race was
tired of supporting carpet-baggers and
thieves and robbers, and now wanted to
vote for honest men. Hence the colored
people were willing to support the Demo
cratic nominee, Thomas W. Grimes, jr.,
for all had confidence in hia honor and
integrity. They know he's a Democrat to
the core, without the alightest particle of
Radicalism ; and, also, that he is an hon
orable gentleman, of intelligence, who
will do justice to all. The large majority
of the colored people will unite with all
the whites iu voting for him.

Rev. J. M. Cargill, colored. Their rega

-city COUNCIL.
REGULAR MEETTNO LAST AFTERNOON,
Present—Mayor C'leghorn : Aldermen
Mehaffey, Grimes. Redd, Andrews, Kent,
Chalmers. Hchuessler, Flournoy. Absent—
Aldermen Blanchard, McGehee, Brannon,
Durkin. *\ *■> - •
Minutes of last meeting were read aud
confirmed.
POLICEMAN RESTORED.
The Mayor reported that on August 29th
be had discharged Policeman James Rob-
arts for drunkenness, and appointed A.
Nathan in his place. They were received.
By Alderman Chalmers—While we wish
always to sustain the Mayor in his effort*
to preserve the effectiveness of the police
force; be it
“lteeolved, That in consideration of the
peat good conduct of Policeman Roberts,
we do not ratify his discharge from the
police force."
Aid. Redd staled he would vote for the
resolution because many of the best citi
zens had requested him to do so. The
Mayor was right in his action ; but the
discharged policeman was such a good
one, and as it was the first offence, he
thought the wishes of the citizdhs should
be regarded.
Alderman Grimes thought (he Mayor
was perfectly right, but the punishment
was sufficient, and he would vote for his
restoration.
The Mayor said ho had no feeling in
the matter, and none against tho officer.
Had it not been for this resolution he
wonld not have said a word. With his
consent ex-officer Roberts had gone into
the country to arrest a desperado, aud
with the amistance of others had suc
ceeded in capturing him. That afternoon
he was druuk. He (tho Mayor) over
looked the offence, aud asked Robaits, as
a special favor, not to to guilty a second
time. Thamomiag report* brought the
intelligence that Roharts had not only
been drunk after the waruing nml expos
tulation. but had assaulted an officer.
The Mayor thought Council should to
consistent. The minutes.just road showed
that Council had confitned the dis
charge of Mr. O'Brieu, who bad beeu
guilty of less drunkenness than in this
case. He had only done Ids duty. Couu-
cil also had a duty to perform. While a
dozen of the best meu might wish Rub-
arts restorod, a hundred desired Council
to treat all fairly and impartially.
Chalmers’ resolution passed. The Mayor
called for the yeas and nays. The fol
lowing voted yes : Meball'ey, Grimes,
Redd, Andrews, Kent. Kehuessler, Chal
mers and Flournoy. No noes.
Thna Roharts was re-instated as police
man. He is a No. 1 officer, and we are
confident will not transgress again.
PETITIONS.
Hook and Ladder Compauy petitioned
to have its tmok and appurtenances re
paired aud repainted. Referred to Com
mittee on Fire Department.
