AnRexMlea-Great Earthquake— leu «r Life and Property. Panama, September 2d.—A hill lias beeu introduced in the Assembly author izing the ceesion of the Darien region to the national government. It passed its first reading, and was referred to a com mittee, hut is likely to meet with strong opposition when it is again brought up for discussion. The United States flag ship, Richmond, is here. A correspondent of the Star and Her ald, writing from Antigua, Guatemala, under date of the Itli insl., reports that ua earthquake took place there the eve- niug before at 81 o’clock, without any pre vious warning. A strong earlliquake shook the ground violently in the direc tion from West to East. The movement was a series of strong vertical and hori zontal impulses combined. The wave, like undulations on the surface, rose aud fell at least a foot. This action alone, with the above meutioued vertical move ment, made it almost impo.siiblo to move about without being / thrown to the ground. Added to this there were the piercing orios of yie populace, the crenking aud racking of walls, loud sounds like thun der from the earth beneath, the rattling noise of tiles, houses and walls falling, which altogether formed n hideous con cert that can never be forgotten. It was very dark, too, and every visible object waH in violent motion. Long after the first shock had passed there was still the noise of walls falling, more or less distinct. Suddenly arose Ih sound of hundreds of voices chanting , hyiuu to the Creator for mercy. Shock followed during the night, of varying in tensities, every one of which’gavo new alarms and new ituploraiiu mercy. The night seemed an age iu length. Fortunately no rain fell. Abo.ut two dozen houses that were inhabited have been destroyed, causing, us far as could be learned, the loss of thirty-two lives. The number of houses duumgod, and which will hnvo to be taken down, will be found considerable. In Guatemala, the capital, tho shock: were felt but slightly. The Indians say that throe villages at the fool of the vol cano were destroyed ; though this wants confirmation. The squares and open praces in Antigua are covered with tent aud other modes of protection. The in habitants fear the approach of nigh!, pectiug a repetition of the earthquake at the sume hour. Even carriages and carts serve as temporary abodes. NEW YORK. HENRY CLEWS A CO.—TILTON AND MOULTON. New Youk, October 5.—llenry Clews A Co. have decided, in fairness to their customers, to suspend for n day ov two the receiving of deposits, and have trans ferred remittances received during the past few days to the custody of the Con tinental Bank and the credit of those who remitted. Their firm do this as a pru dential matter, though a much larger loan than the XT00,000 already negotiated in London is expected in a few days. Theodore Tilton aud Francis 1>. Moul ton were officially notified this morning of the indictments found against them by the grand jury for libel aud slander against Mr. Beecher. Bail in each case was fixed at three thousand dollars, which they will be required to furnish by to- morvow. FREERMEK’S HANK. THE OREAT RADICAL SWINDLE ON TUB TuOH XKORO—NO DIVIDEND. AND LITTLE PROSPECT OP ANY. Washington, October 5.—The Commis sioners to settle the affairs of tho Freed- men’s Saving and Trust Coiupuny write to a correspondent: “It is impossible yet to say when the first dividend will be paid.” They have now only $45,01)0 in tho treasury, and $000,000 are required as the basis of a dividend of twenty per oeut. In the preseut condition of tho money market, and on account of the high rate of taxation in the District of Columbia, the collections are slow and very small; so it will take a long timo to raise sufficient funds to make such a divi dend. The approximate liabilities on tho 11th of July were $2,800,000, and tho assets $2,700,000, while much will be lost in collections. A considerable sum will be realized in accumulated interest. As a matter of economy it has been de termined to close tho thirty-throe branch- es at the end of this mouth, by which a saving of at least $100,000 will bo ef fected. KELLOGG s REPORT.
