Month of Captain S. H. Hill.
Death has of late beau asserting his
triumphant power by striking down al
most suddenly several of our well known
and highly respected citizens. The last
prominent victim who has withered under
his icy touch, was Capt. 8. H. Hill, agent
of tho Southern Express Company of this
city, who died at his residence in Wynn-
tou on Sunday morning last of apoplexy,
combined with erysipilus, in the 50th year
of his age. Ho had been unwell ouly a
fow days; he had - eaten supper and re
tired, prophesying that he would be all
right in the morning. His wife was
awakened at a late hour by his violent
convulsions, and he diod before medical
aid could be procured.
Capt. SainuePU. Hill was born iu Ver
mont. Ho has resided in Columbus for
tho past twenty-one years. 'The years of
his earlier life were past at sea, where
he gradually arose from a sailor boy to be
mate of a tirst-class ship. He 3
gaged both in the Mediterranean and
South American trades. Possessed of su
perior intelligence, he interested hearers
by the hour with narratives of ocean life,
and it appeared to he his highest wish to
again become a seaman.
Ho caflio to Columbus iu 1852 as agent
of Adams' Express Company, now known
in this section us the Southern. Some
two or throe years aftor he became cap
tain of tho steamer Cusseta, belonging to
H. McClay, and ply lug hetweeu this point
and Apalachicola. In Iho capacity of
captain, his native goodness of heart,
uniform courtesy and accommodating dis-
poHilioti won for him hosts of friends.
The boat having sunk, and the proprie
tor selling out, he aguiu became Express
agent in Columbus, which position be has
since held. A more popular and obliging
oOicor never filled any position. He ex
tended courtesies to all classes, and won
many warm frieuds in all circles. He was
also a director of the Chattahoochee Na
tional Hank.
As a citizen ho was universally respect
ed mid beloved. High-toned and public-
spirited, all enterprises pertaining to the
welfare and advancement of liis adopted
ity found in him & warm supporter. He
opened his hand and heart to all good
works, and though not a member of any
Christian church, ho possessed a deep and
abiding reverence for religion, and exeiu
piitied in bis daily life thut true charity
thnt is best expressed in love for his fol
low man. He bad been twice married—
first to a daughter of Uncle Sum Koocko-
gey, and secondly to MisH Emma Fuller,
the latter marriage taking place on 8th
July of tho present year, lie leaves an
almost heart-broken young wife, two
small sons, and a largo circle of friends
and acquaintances to lament bis sudden
and unexpected death. A brother, re
siding iu Springfield, Mass., and a mar.
riod sister, Mrs. Coulter, survive hiui.
His l'uuoral servioes took place at St.
Luke chnroh yesterday at. 11 o’olook. The
old church whs crowded with u largo con
course of all classes and sects of our citi
zens, all seeming to have been drawn to
gether by an impulse to honor the
memory of so good a man.
Tho burial eolloct was read by Rev. J.
H. Key, puHtor of the church, after which
the venerable Dr. L. Pierce made some
suitable remarks, bused upon two passa
ges of Solomon, rolutiug to the inestima
ble value of a good numo, which he
thought the deceased well illustrated in
his life uud character, iu its real worth.
Thu Doctor dwelt upon the benefits of
such a name, and mnde soino tine practi
cal suggestions in regard to life and death
The remaius were followed to the
gruvo by a long funeral cortogo, in which
we noticed a procession of Columbian
Masonic Lodge, numbering sixty-four
members, with Col. F. G. Wilkins as
Marshal, a position the deceased lins sc
often tilled.
At tho grave tho beautiful and impres
sive rites of that Order formed the clos
ing honors to tho respected dead.
The following goutloiuen constituted
the pall bearers; G. C. McGeliee, L. K.
Hoopes, J. Mcllhonny, J. A. Frazier, N.
Crown, W. G. Clemons, E. 8. Hanks, A.

DEMOCRATS, TO THE RESCUE:
VICTORY OR DEGRADATION !
We do not write for the purpose of
urging the white men of Muscogee to do
their duty ; for, with such grave issues
before the people, every white man fully
appreciates the situation, and will exert
his every euergy for the overthrow of
Radicalism.
We desire, however, to tell tho people
the dangers that environ our ticket, and
to warn them of tho Radical strength.
The negroes are fully organized, and are
making a final attempt to overthrow tho
white man's government, and erect in
stead a corrupt administration, pledged
to carry out the overwhelming iniquities
of tho Civil Rights bill. Do not under
rate the strength and vote of the negroes.
They are better drilled than ever before,
and to defeat them it will take the full
streugth of our party. Let each of us
feel the solemn duty of the hour. Never
let it be said that the standard-bearers of
truth and principle, Messrs. Williams and
Grimes, suffered a defeat by the apathy
of their own race. Luy aside all personal
feeling, remembering the Democratic
motto, “Principles—not men." lie is
untrue to his home, his wife and children,
who loses his vote. Sick or busy, to
the polls to-morrow, and not only vote,
but work. • We can not afford to lose a
single vote. Stop yonr cotton-picking,
olose your stores, send your employees to
the polls, and let nothing interfere to
prevent your casting your vote and influ
ence against social equality. There is uo
middle ground in the contest. It is a
square issue between tho whites and
blacks. Failure to vote for tho white
man is virtual opposition. Look at the
condition of down-trodden Louisiana,and
our sister Alabama, uud then stand in an
unbroken pbulaux, opposing oppression
and degradation. To be indifferent, and
inactive is treachery against your race,
and to your dearest rights. As a distin
guished Georgian has well said, “Who is
ambitions aftor the election is over to say
my vote would Lave savod it.”
Let these men who represent us and
the rights of the whole people have
hearty, unwavering support, and over
whelming majority, and such a shout ot
victory will be beard throughout this
land, that will forever bury the Radical
party with its infernal briberies, corrup
tions and social equality isms.
Another Rare.
The Columbus mare, Moisey or Lady
Emma, has been engaged in another trot
ting match in Fleetwood Park in a 41,000
race for 2:31 horses—$500 to first, $350
to second, and $150 to third. She was
entered by Jack Chambers. She won the
second and third heats, and came out sec
ond on the first, fourth, fifth and sixth.
Nolly.Walton won the race, Moisey sec
ond, Lady Dahlman third, Heatherbloom
fourth. Shortest time made 2:31 (by
Nelly and Moisey), longest 2:34 j[.
Lady Dahlman sold for 450; Nelly Wal
ton, $35; Moisey, $38, and Heather-
bloom, $13. Moisey won the second and
third heats, when she became a hot favor
ite at $105, and the field brought $55.
On the fourth heat, however, Nelly Wal
ton cuine to the front, but this did not
shake the confidence of Moisey's backers,
and she still remained the favorite at $120
to $00. Nelly Walton took the fifth heat,
however, and the knowing ones wero all
at sea. Nelly Walton lasted the longest,
and won haudily.

About two weeks ago I assumed the Local
