Our Iron Workers—Another limit.
We are glad t«f notice that our iron me
chanics at the Columbus Iron Works have
been employed on full time for several
weaks. There is a good prospect of their
receiving the contract for putting up
the machinery for another new boat to be
built iu Savannah for the Oconee river.
They have heretofore had a good run
of augar mill and gin work, which we
hope will increase as the Reason advances.
About $800 uro now being paid out week
ly at these mammoth works to employees
aud for other expenses. All this money
it spent here, aud helps to keep up busi
ness. No belter shops or workmen can
be found in Georgia, and we wish them
abundant prosperity.

Cotton Stealing.
This business seeuis to be vigorously
iroughout this seotion. On Mon
day night one or more thieves entered the
gin house of Mr. Barr, near Suwtnervilin,
knocked off the iron hoops from n bale of
cotton, and carried off about half the
same, it is supposed, in bags. No due to
the thieves at last accounts.
Such complaints are becoming quite
frequent. The cotton is stolen both in
the seed and in the iiut. It is very oltcn
traded off to shop keeper* in the city and
suburbs. Tljp practice is becoming very
annoying to planters, and must lead to
trouble among the thieves unless shipped.
The parties who knowingly encourage
such petty thieving by purchasing the
stolon cotton are equally guilty with tho
thieves themselves, aud liable to nrrest,
trial and conviction. Such rascality
should receive no oucourageiuent from
our suburban traders. When they have
the least reasou to suspect that the small
parcels of cotton offered them has been
stolen, they should use thoir influence to
arrest the offender* and bring them to
justice. Thieves have held sway long
enough, and it is now high time honest
people should be made secure in their
rights and property.
