Fannie Connell and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Baldwin are invited to attend the funeral
of KmtBB, daughter of Mrs. Connell,

low Crawford, at o’clock this (Suudny)

This body held its onDQtl moating at
the Conuoil Chamber at 4 o’clock yester
day afternoon.
It being Saturday, and “payday” with
moat of onr manufactories, there waa
only a small turn ont of the inerohants.
Owing to the slim attendance it was re
solved to defer the annual election of of-
fleers until Friday night, ltith inst., at
o’clock. *At that time the Board of
Trade will meet at the Council Chamber.
Some good motions were adopted, one
which was that the Supervising Com
mittee be instructed to confer with a like
Committee of tho Chambers of Commerce
other Georgia cities, and see if some
practical plan cannot be devised to lower
the Hoard rates of Insurance in Georgia.
There is no disputing the faot that inau-
ruuce rates are higher Soath than at the
North, and such should not be.
A committee of three, consisting of
M. Alien, G. Gunby Jordan and A. V.
Bontrite, was Appointed to confer with
tho Mobile and Girard and Montgomery
and Entmla lUil roads and the Central
Line Boats, to soe if some arrangement
cannot be consummated to deliver goods
the boats at Enfaula and receive cotton
from them consigned to Columbus at a
reasonable rate of freight. Kuch an ar
rangement will save us the liver trade,
and be of great value to the city.
The Chamber of Commerce will have
done grout service if it accomplishes no
more than this move. God speed suoh
organizations. Wo need life in Columbus
and we are fast getting it.

Columbus ought certainly to ba under
great obligations to the Central Line of
Boats. The new, light draught steamer
will offer a practioal solution of how to
utilize low water. While our merchants
and Council were sleeping over this river,
tho trade was all going to Savannnh, be
cause boats could not run. Now it will
ail coiue here, willingly aud quickly.
The light steamer and the Congressional
appropriation have saved us thousands.

We notice immense shipments being
made by the Factories to Macou during
the past week. The Central City is a
live, progreBsive town, and knows exactly
where to buy her domestics. The two

Bro., and Ross A Coleman, use more Ea
gle A Pheuix goods than every store in
Columbus combined. Why can’t some of
our live merchants do it up that way ?

.A Most Excellent Artist.
Mr. A. L. Duffee is one of the most
accomplished artists wo have ever known
in Columbus. His taste, too, is unexcep
tionable. We have, of late, seen speci
mens of likenesses, enlarged photographs,
executed in India ink and colors, which
are very beautiful, and show that the
esthetic culture of the painter is equalled
by the skill and taste of the eolorist. In
this peculiar line he is master of the
pencil and brush, and produces the most
pleasant effects; He makes his pictures
speak true to the life, while he delineates

It is Not True !
Theie seems to be an opinion prevalent
with some portion* that there will be a
further postponement of the Library Con

We speak rr onthrdra when we say that
Governor Braiuletto informs us, and
through us the public, that the drawing
will take place on the JlOtli of November
as surely os that day will arrive in the
calendar. Those who wish to partake of
the benefits of the gifts, or to udd their

should not delay an hour t* become share
