A church, in Butler, Ga., occupied Jointly by the colored Methodists and Daptiata, waa burned down Sunday night. Tho building was new, having junt been completed. Believed to have been the work of an incondiary. Churches Sunday. Sunday waa a lovely fall day, and the ohnrohen were generally well attended. All wore anppliod with regular mi runt era. Servicea woro held at the Girard and Browneviile churches at night. Ueod Work. Three lady weavers, attaches of tho E. A P. mills, earned jointly during the paat two weeks $(50, or an uverngo of $ 10 each per week. The boat weaver of the trio earned $25 in the time named. This kind of M Hottlinga" wonld soon enable tho operatives to become riob. The threo ladiea are aisters. Accident to « Child. Mary, a little four year old daughter of Rev. Mr. MoUehee, full out of doora backwards from the roar porch of hia dwelling in this city on Sunday last, and by the fall wan seriously injured about the bead and otherwise. The reverend gentleman, who was preaching at Colum- bua factory at tbo hour of tho full, waa aent for. We hope tho child's injuries will not prove fatal, though some uueasi neaa wax felt about her condition yoster- <uy. _ The Columhua Cigar Emporium. I»uis lluhler haa removed hia cigAr and tobaooo emporium from Randolph, to No. 8*4, east aide of Broad street. If you are in pain or sorrow, call at Bullion and he will, for a small consideration, give you a cigar from Havana or Key West, aa you prefer, which will solace all your woes. Besides, he has the choicest pipe. —from foamy mcrschauma to the short-stem—chewing tobacco, aud snuff. Hia stock in a very largo and oompleteone, bought to tho vory beat advantage. Call on him, and you can't help being delight ed with hia goods. Burnt Cork at the Opara Hauer. Notwithstanding tho sudden coldness of the weather, Haverly’a Minstrels were greeted last night in the Opera Hon«e by a large audience. The chairs were filled and the gallery crowded. Oar people love to laugh, and tho performance gratified their desire to heart's content. I hen, too, we had choice music and rich choruses to satisfy the tastes of the music loving, and bread farcot to bring down the houso. The Welling* sing charmingly ; and the “California Quartette” produce delightful harmonies. Hall is the bent banjoiatthat has ever appeared in Columbus. The andience waa perfectly carried away at the melody which he extracted from such a familiar instrument. His rendition of “Home, Sweet Home,” with variations, was truly artistic, and excited pleasure, wonder and applause. His songs, too, were taking. * Barlow must have been raised in Georgia and Alabama, for he is perfect in hia imitations of the field ne gro at corn shucking* and camp meetings. We have never heard his superior. Con tinuous laughter greeted hia every ap pearance. Tho “Hooligan Guard” was a capital, rollicking take off-by leading metn- bera of the company, and ho was “Juliana Johnson,” by Messrs. Goss and Fox. “Old Black Joe,” by Barlow, was admir able, and George Wilson’s version of “Hamlet and bis Ma" waa really jolly. Canfield and Booker's original songs and dances weio enjoyable. Tho “Cupids of Virginia” was u glorious farce. An au lienee generally never more en joyed a show. Haverly was the manager of the popular Cal. Wagner Company. He has improved on the former one, for the present one ia vns ly superior in every sense, with Cal. Wagner loft out. To-night another entaiument is to bo given. Tho programme is to be entirely changed. Go all who wool 1 hear good music, witticisms, aud delight in laughing at acting that is real jolly. LEE COUNTY ITEMS. A Democratic basket pic nic was given at Sear’s Crors itoads, Lee county, thir teen inilos from Coluinbus, on Siturdny last. The people of the neighborhood were out iu force. Speeches wero made by Dr. Green, John T. Harris and Wilson Williams of Opelika. On the evening of the name div, some throe miles from the pic nic grounds, a negro nnmod Moseman was shot through tho body by a white man named Wade. Politics had nothing to do with the shoot ing. The difficulty arose out of a quarrel about a house which tho uegro wes build ing for tho white man. 1 he wounded man, at last accounts, was thought to bo in a critical condition. The pohticnl canvass ill Loo is waxing worm. On Sunday, a white Radical, while electioneering with a negro, a few miles from Columbus, expatiated nt lurge upon tho Levities aud benefits of Civil Lights. The uegro listened patiently awhile, and then told his white ally “he didn’t want uny civil rights iu his’u.” ‘Well,” said tho aspiraut, “I don’t favor the bill myself, but all tho balance of my ticket does." The tactics of this candi* d«te is to be all things to all inon, in tho hope of catching votes. ALABAMA SUBURBS. UROWKKVILLK. The Democrats will use nil necessary exertions to carry the approaching elec tions. Business has been duller than usual daring the snspeiihien of Mill No. 1. Mr. Walker’s school exhibition will tako place at the Baptist Church Thursday night. It promises to be a pleasant en tertainment, and will bo largely attended. “Old Pompoy,” a well known colored man, died yesterday morning, upwards of one hundred years of age, and had, since tho war, lived by tbo charity of the neighborhood. The City Common. A meeting of Cominou Commissioners was hold at Peabody A Brauuon’s office Saturday afternoon. No business of iiu portanco was transacted. The committee appointed nt a previous meeting to coufor with tho Southwest* Railroad authorities in relation to amount of ground claimed und occupied by said corporation, reported no defiuile action takon, and was allowed further time. The committee consists of B. F. Coleman, W. L. Salisbury and II. S. list os. Tho time of the monthly meetings of tho Commissioner t was changed from iho second Saturday afternoon to tho second Friday night in ench month. Tho matter of the salo of tbo city com mon was diftcusKcd in an unofficial man ner, aud some of the Commissioners ex pressed themselves in favor of Rolliug a few lots, nt least, by way of experiment. If the common lots are ever to be sur veyed aud 6old, it would not bo a bad idea to experiment a littlo now und seo what can be done. Even if alternate lots art! sold at mere nominal values, it would opon tho way to expansion, start afresh the spirit of improvement, and in a few years vastly enhance the value of tho un sold lots. Death—Neglect. A man named Thomas Mint or, who has bun in thia vicinity about eighteen months, died at the Jaek Howard house in Liuwood on Saturday morning last, of brain fever. He came from South Caro lina, where he bore a good reputation. Little seems to have beeo known of him here. The female inmates of his family all being sick during last week, it is be lieved that Mr. Minter must have suffered from neglect ia his last illness. It was difficult to got anybody to pay tho last necessary attentions after death. Ho was to have been buried Sunday afternoon, but owing to a blunder the coffin ordered was too abort, aud the remains were kept out till yesterday morning, in the mean time becoming very offensive. There being no one to sit up with tho corpse Saturday night, it was locked up alone in a room. Wekuownotwho is to blsme in the matter, but such things should not be in this boasted Christian land. All oommunitiee should look out for euch cases of destitution and distress, and provide for thsir relief when poeaible. it. CITY COUNCIL. REOCLAB MEETING LAST SIGHT.
