FERTILIZING COMPOUNDS. INTERESTING TKBTIMONY. A case involving the value of Sternfel’s Dissolved Bono was triod in the County Court of Richmond on Monday. Col. G. W. Bains gave scientific testimony iu the case, and as liis statements appear to con tain valuable information, wo copy from the Augusta Chronicle h report: He said that one great trouble with the planters, as a general rule, was that they did not understand what their lands need ed iu tho way of fertilizers, and therefore treated them improperly. Some lands needed the presence of a larger per cent, of ammonia, and others of phosphoric acid. These two were the prime requi sites iu a good fertilizer, but it was essen tial to know which was neoded most on certain kinds of lauds. Too much am monia would make a large and luxuriant plant and but little fruit, while too much phosphoric acid would mnkc a dwarf plant and an excessive yield of fruit. The two iu proper proportion wore uocessary to effect the happy medium. When nn in sufficient quantity of concentrated fertil izers is used, and the soil iu its ordinary I stute coutaius but little to assist vegeta tion, the plant limy grow up finely, aud up to a certain period bo strong and liouliby; but when the lime arrives, when all ilio soluble constituents of the fertil izers luve become absorbed or exhausted, the plant sirJden'y ceases to grow, because it hua no more of its necessary food sup ply. All of its bolls are opened at an early period, because no now ones wore formed, and tho surplus squares cast olf from an iual ility lo perfect their development. In ail such eases, had compost been used with the fertilizer the plant would have continued its growth. Fertilizers are valuable in proportion to tho amounts of ammonia and houo oarth. Either can be used a'ono, but bv far tho largest yield is by cum I ining tho two together. Bust, ho said, is a diseased state of the plant which has its juices partly ah orbed and the re mainder greatly vitiated by au extremely minute vegetable parasite ; in the case of cotton, it not only attacks the outer parts of the plant, but becomes absorbed in the pores of the roots, and thus finds its way even into the interior of the cotton fibre itself. The diseased condition of the plant may spring from too small a quan tity of fertilizer having been used, cr from too much or too little rain. Where fertilizers are used tho roots of the plant push along the row, and when the fertil izers fail the nutriment of tho plant is oue. Of all the fertilizers, ammonia nd its equivalent nitrogenous compounds re iu general tho most valuable; not a issue of the plant can be formed without be presence of nitrogon. A healthy laut can only come from a healthy seed r parent; it derives its nutriment in its arly growth from tho juices of the seed hich are secreted or formed from the lid parts of tho gruin, the young veg- tablo being yet too undeveloped to ob- in its food from tho oarth and air.
