Heath of Judge Marshallftwttoria
A father in Israel has departed. There
are few in this section to whom tho intel
ligence of the death of Judge Wellborn
will not bring a pang of sorrow, for in
his daily walk and, life, in precept and
example, be exemplified the doctrines lie
taught, and in his walk and conversation
provod himself a disciple of Jesus, an
humble follower of the cross. His purse
was ever open to the call of suffering hu
manity, his mercy shown to every erring
human creature that crossed his pathway.
The rich found in him a comforter—the
poor, a friend in time of noed.
He came to Columbus Thursday nftor-
noon from his round of pastoral visits in
tho country, and stopped at the Central
Hotel. He complained of great fn:igue,
and stated to tho writer that liis pulpit
duties had broken him down. Yesterday
he was on onr stroots until roarly noon,
when bo retired to the hotel. While
reudiug a paper in the sitting-room, ho
complained of pain in his side, and di
rected a servant to assist him to his room.
The waiter, finding he was so unwell, car
ried him to tho nearest apartment and
aided in undressing him. The Judge sent
for Mr. J. Marion Es'es, a warm personal
friend, who immediately obeyed tho sum
mons. Boeing him, the aged Christian
said, “Thunk God, I nin not to die alone.”
Shortly after he was seized with vomi
ting, and died in Mr. EsIgh’ urms. Life
wan extinct in some fifteen minutes after
ho left the s!roots.
liis age was some sixty-eight years.
Of his earlier years we know hut little,
lie was born in Putnam county. His
parents wore very poor, lly hard work
he managed to secure the means to entor
the University of Georgia at Athens, and
in 1828 was a member of tho Junior class,
whon wMit of money forced him to retire
from tho institution. lie was admitted to
the practice of tho law by special act of
tho Logislatuao beforo lie was of ago, and
rapidly rose to eminence in his profes
sion.* In early life ho removed to Ham
ilton, and subsequently to this city. In
1842 we find him Judge of tho Superior
Court of tho CbnUahoookeo circuit,
which position he tilled with honor one
term. Afterwards lie visited Europe and
traveled over the continent. Returning
homo ho was elected to Congress, suc
ceeding lion. Alfred Iverson and sorvod
one term. For n number of years he was
u member of the prominent legal firm of
Wellborn, Johnson A Sloan. Col. Sloan
was killed in battle in Virginia. Judge
Johnson is now the presiding oftlcer of
our Superior Court. As a lawyer, Judge
Wellborn amassed a handsome compe
tence.
In tho spring of 186.8 Judge Wellborn
united with tho Baptist Church iu Colum
bus, nnd was immersed by the pastor,
Rev. Dr. J. 11. DoVotio. If ovor a man
was converted, he was. Religious exer
cises Hocmod to demand his wholo time,
whilo his actions were alive to ovory gen
erous impulse. Ho was one of tho two
who contributed the largest amount to
tho oreolion of the handsome cditico the
Buptists now own in Columbus.
On June 29th, 1861, he was ordained as
a minister of tho BuptiKl Church. The
ordination sermon was preached by Itov.
W. D. Anderson, prayer offered by Rev.
T. B. Blade, tho charge delivered by ltov.
W. J. Hurd, nnd tho presentation of tho
Bible wusTnado by Rev. l)r. J. II. Do
Votio, nftor which tho candidate delivered
tho benediction.
Judge Wellborn then commenced
preaching to the church at, Hamilton and
noveral others iu Georgia mid Alabama,
refusing to accept any salary, liberally
contributing. His life since lias boon one
of devotion to the cause of liis Master,
and to it lma ho given his .entire income.
Talents, time aud money havo been em
ployed most liberally to the advancement
of Christianity. Disease omaciatnd the
body, but effected not tho soul. Revered
nnd honorod, ho has gone to liis reward.
Soldier of God, well douo!
Tho remains lust night wore removed
from the hotel to tho rcsidonco of Mr.
Estes. It is not known when the funeral
will take place, ns tho arrival of his
nephew, Judge John T. Clarke is awaited.
Jndge Wollborn was never married.
