Wellborn will take place at tho * Baptist Church to-day (Sunday) at 11 o’clock. ’ Rev. Dr. J. II. DeVotie, of Griffin, will preach tho funeral sermon. As a token of respect for tho distin guished dead, no morning servico will ho held at St. Luke, St. Paul or tho Prosby- terian churches. The usual afternoon and night services will take place an usual at oach of these churches. Judge Wellborn, in May, would have been €7 years of age. They show no lack of corn and fodder. —Big cotton picking by individual hands is now the foature of tho country. —Tho frost of last Wednesday «lid a good deal of damage to cotton in low lands along the lino of the Mobilo and Girard Railroad. —Yesterday, windy, somewhat cloudy and threatening more rain—a consumma tion to bo desired as our river is very low. From the Supreme Court of Georgia comas high praise for the clerical force of Muscogee Superior Court. Superior Court— Storm—Damage. Tho Harris Superior Court, which has been iu session iu Hamilton since Monday morning, adjourned about noon Friday, owing to the illness of Judge Johnsou. 'I ho lawyers present were B. H. Bighnm, F. M. Longloy, Mr. Turner, of LaGrnnge ; B. L. Harris, senior and junior, of West Point; C. Calhoun, of Box Springs ; E. H Worrill, J. T. Willis, Henry Martin, of Talbotton ; Hines Dozier, of Wavorly Hall; M. J. Crawford, Porter Ingram, John Poabody, A. A. Dozier, C. R. and R. M. and J. M. Bussell, M. II. Bland- ford aud 0. J. Thornton, of Columbus. No cases of importance were com menced. Tho criminal dockot was hardly taken np. A negro charged with iuping a col ored girl, had his case continued by cou- sont. A number of criminals have es caped from jail. A heavy wind and vain storm occurred on Friday night. The roof of the gin- houso of Mr. Ogletree was blown off, and (ho blacksmith shop at Naces’ loveled with tho dust. Considerable damage to fenc ing wafc done in the neighborhood. Death of Judge M. J. Wellborn. MEETING OF THE BAR OF COLUMBUS. Upon notice of tho death of Judge Wellborn, a mooting of the members of tho bar of Columbus was culled at tho of fice of Ingram ft Crawford, When, on motion, Judgo James John son was called to tho chair and Porter In gram was appointed Secretary. When, on motion, tho Chairman ap pointed Absalom II. Chappell, Henry L. Benuiug, M. J. Crawford, Gustavuu L. Do Launey and L. T. Downing as a eoui- mitte to draft suitable resolutions in ref erence to tho life and character of the decensed, and to roport the same to the next Superior Court for said county. Dauiol Collins yesterday brought suit before Justice W. B. Harris, for $84, against T. J. Jackson and Ed. Roborts, former trustees of tho Girard public schools, for oortnin improvements made by said Collins on tho Girard Academy by agreement with tho aforesaid trustees. Tho defendants plead through tlioir attor ney, A. A. Dozier, Esq., that they wore t liable for tho money nor any portion of it, inasmuch as tho improvouiontn mado <m tho faith of a public subscription id by tho citizens for tho purpose, and that they as trustees only consented to tho improvements to the extent of the subscription, and no further. Justice Harris decided that though ho did not consider tho individual property of de fendants liable for tho obligation, yet lia bility must rost somewhere, and that the work done gave tho architect the right to a lien thereon. So fts tlie case now' stands tho school-house is liable to levy and sule, unloss tho citizens make up the deficit, or rentals to satisfy the cluim of Mr. Collins. _ New Lot Furniture Twill*. Tho city’s estimated expenses wore $20,000 41. Tho bridge alone yielilqd $9000. Stone ft McCollum’s circa* was in the city daring March. In March the Montgomery and West Point Railroad halted at Opelika. The Directors wanted to seo what Columbus would do in constructing tho road to Barnesville. If nothing, they iutond to pursue their original intention and go to West Point. The Enquirer was olectod City Printer for $100 and a discount of 58 per cont. on job work. Population of Columbus in March, 1848, is thus stated: White males 1,701; fo- males 1,503; slaves owned by residents 1,522; slaves owned by n8n-residents 2GG; freo male persous of color 15, females 27—total 5,074. Columbus then had 125 persons with no t ratio or profession, 8 clergymen, 26 law yers. 18 physicians, (» dentists, 12 printers and publishers, 303 merebauts aud clerks, 20 brokers and factors, 3 auction and com mission merchants, 75 shopkeepers, 7 sil versmiths, 2 book-binders, 4 music pro fessors, 10 bankers and clerks, 12 manu facturers, 6 machinists, 72 carpenters, 5 blacksmith*, 17 wheel and carriago mak ers, 5 brass aud irou founders, 10 steam boat men, 13 cabinet tuakors, 12 sign aud houso painters, 4 saddle and harness milk ers, 7 tinners, 10 tailors, 2 gunsmiths, 10 briokmakors and plasterers, 3 bakers, 2 coopers, I dyer and scourer, 1 hatter, 1 marble-cutter, 4 artists. On March 18th, whilo building Wall’s bridge over the Upatoio, one of the arches gave way aud fell. Wesley Smith was in stantly killed aud others hurt, tw'o dan gerously. The March papers are full of tho over throw of Louis Philippe of Franco. Ilis throne was tukon from tho Tnileries aud burned by tho mob. Couucil resolved that citizens hnd the right to get sand from tho east commons, betweou tho two roads loading through them. Tho Columbus Guards passed a tribnlo of respect to W. Chandler Holt, who died of disease contracted during the Mcxicau var. The bar of Columbus also passed esolutions of respect. Tho contract for the completion of tho State Road from Dalton to Chattanooga March 21st, undertaken by Allen Cochran, John D. Gray and Asa Bates ft Co., for $3(»i>,000 ; to bo completed iu October, 1849. A negro on April 8th broke tho head of Stephen Dock. Telegraphic communication was opened with Macon eHrly iu April, and is expect ed to roach Columbus by tho middle of May. Colton in March was quoted at 5 to Go.; in April at li to 5c. Among tho foreign rumors is one that tho Rotli8ohilds hadjfailed. A Whig State Convention was held in Millo Igevillo on May 8tli—Win. Terrell was President, aud Peterson Tlrwoutt and Win. 11. Scott Secretaries. No delegates from Musoogoo wore reported. The Con vention appointed delegates to tho Na tional Convention, aud electors, and pis e l tho following resolution :* “Resolved, That tho nomination of Gen. Zachary Taylor, for the Chief Mag istracy of this Union, moots tho hearty concurrence of a majority of the Conven tion ; but iu tho spirit of n just and lib- oral concession,wo stand ready to support Henry Cloy, or any other Whig who inuy tie tho notnineo of tho Whig party ; pro vided tho views of tho nominoo accord with our own on tho subject of tho Wil- mot proviso i^.l Southern rights.” Fire Co.
